OUT OF THE SILENCE: SONGS OF RUSSIAN JEWRY
with Reuven Frankel, Baritone & Lazar Weiner at the piano
FAMOUS RECORDS FAM-1038 Circa 1970 STEREO
Tzu Eins Tzvei Drai' (To 'One, Two, Three') Shir Hamaalos (A Song of Ascents) Shlof Main Kind (Sleep My Child) In Cheder (In the Classroom) Der Filosof (The Philosopher)
Ahin! Ahin! (Yonder! Yonder!) El Hatzipor (To The Bird) Omar Adoshem L'Yaakov (G-d Spoke To Jacob) Shir Hashirim (Song of Songs) Zog Maran (Tell me, Marrano) Tsur Yisroel (Rock of Israel)
Editor's note: 1 pound of Jewry coming right up. Disc, sleeve and all. A couple of guys with overtly Jewish names banging and belting out pure musical Jewry. I can't say it really touches me but that's just because my big Polish nose is blocking the border! The Poles were also suppressed by the Russians and what do they have to show for it musically? THE CHICKEN DANCE! Brilliant!
I came across this record on a few blogs and managed to track down some audio from WFMU's site. I would love to hear more from this honky-tonkin' caterwaulin' queen. Listen to the tracks below and I think you will too!
