THE UNCOMMON MAN

by Paul Harvey

WORD RECORDS
W 3184
1960

THE MESSAGE WAS INEVITABLE

In an era when we have tended to deify the common man, Paul Harvey puts the spurs to the uncommon ones. In an hour when regimentation and restraint discourage individual excellence, when politicians plead the cause of the "average man", this recording indicts him. Paul Harvey believes we cannot survive the long cold war, much less win it, if we standardize mediocrity while our adversaries are rewarding excellence.

He is "not nearly so anxious about the lousy communists as about the lazy Americans." He is more anxious about the mushrooming dictatorship in Washington than about the one in Moscow. It is said that to plead the cause of individual liberty is not a "popular" thing to do these days. It wasn't popular when Patrick Henry did it, either. But somebody had to.

HIS SCALPEL IS WORDS...

Each time the familiar and beloved "HELLO AMERICANS" echoes across the nation or through a banquet hall, the audience feels anticipation akin to that found in hospital operating rooms. Once again a master surgeon is at work...proning, examining and removing cancerous growth from today's society.

THE SURGEON IS PAUL HARVEY...HIS PATIENT, AMERICA!

Unlike some who feel that the body must be destroyed in order to rid it of unwholesome influences, Paul Harvey has a deep and transcendent love for his patient -- his is a burning desire to see it well, strong and vital once more. This feeling puts magic into his words...sincerity and believability into his messages. In some mysterious manner his love is transmitted and magnified through the airways -- even as it is on this album.

TWO OPERATIONS...BOTH SUCCESSFUL

The first speech on this album isolates and examines an age-old theory that equality exists among men. This presentation is entitled, "NOT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL!" After admitting that this is an unsettling statement, he proceeds clearly and concisely to prove that although all men are created equal in the eyes of God, they are far from equal in the eyes of their fellowmen.

The Back Side of the album is entitled "THE UNCOMMON MAN." It is a brilliant dissertation of America's newly acquired "Cult for the Glorification and Deification of the Average Man." With sharp and incisive strokes of his verbal "scalpel," Paul Harvey exposes for all to see, the fallacies of MEDIOCRITY. He conclusively proves by both history and common sense that America cannot retain its world-wide leadership by adhering to the "Average". He defines "Average" as being either "the best of the lousiest or the lousiest of the best.!"

PAUL HARVEY...AMERICAN

This man's "news-sense" PlUS his inimitable delivery has made him America's best-known newscaster. Three times daily, millions of sets are turned on "to hear what Paul Harvey has to say. Indeed, this "Oklahoman-turned-Chicagoan", has captured the hearts and minds of the radio public.

He began his career while still a student in Tulsa. Following his association with Station KVOO in Tulsa, he migrated to Chicago via announcing jobs in Kansas, Hawaii and St. Louis. It was while he was in the latter city that he met and married the girl he refers to as "Angel" in his ABC broadcasts. The couple and their son, Paul, Jr., reside in the suburbs of Chicago. Occasionally, when Mr. Harvey's schedule permits, they steal away to a farm that borders the Mississippi River, south of St. Louis.

Editor's note: if you don't know Paul Harvey then you don't know AM radio. I used to do a fairly good Paul Harvey impersonation but found that the more I did it the worse it got. It went from being overtly quirky to a buzzed mimicry to full-blown punch drunk. It wasn't really a response to anything that he did or said but I felt that his endings were so put on that I should make my impression as off-putting as possible. As you can see...Paul Harvey is a legend and I'm just some dolt on the internet typing about Paul Harvey.
