Editor's note: I'm sure that Mr. Lonie was regularly called Mr. Looney by the school kids where he gave his speeches but the guy is pretty good regardless of your religious bent. He got a few silly chuckles out of me and a few cringes as well when he projected his voice above the sound of thunder. And to think that this giant of a man-speaker once lived 15 miles or so from me! I was just in Southfield yesterday too and channeled Don through the great antennae at WXYZ-TV.

My mother probably still has this album somewhere along with the original "Don Lonie Talks To Teenagers". My brother and I used to listen to them all the time growing up. Thanks for sharing!

Don Lonie was a speaker who blended the Christian gospel, common sense, and American patriotism into one package. He represents all that was superficial about American evangelicals in the 50's. A man could be a Mormon and agree with everything he said and stay a Mormon. A man could be a red neck Baptist in the deep south, say Amen to everything he said and still be a red neck. Speakers such as Lonie did not challenge people with the real meaning of the gospel. In Christ we die to everything we were in Adam.

Robert Easton, if only millions of others had Don Lonie's perceived shortcomings!

The Old Testament prophets did condemn the sins of the pagan nations but under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit they also condemned the sins of Judah and Israel. Nobody escaped their sin under a Holy God. In the 50's American evangelicals rightfully condemned the evils of communism but turned a blind eye to a homosexual tyrant such as J. Edgar Hoover. He was a Republican and a Presbyterian so he got a free pass. As Christians we have to die to our pride, arrogance, and self-sufficiency. Lonie preached a gospel that included Americans as exceptional and better than others. The Jews who crucified Christ had the same mentality.
