SIDE B:

IT'S HALLOWEEN

by Jack Prelutsky

SCHOLASTIC RECORDS

33 1/3

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

Editor's note: I'd never heard of the author before I dug this out of a thrift store box but apparently he's rather reknown for his children's poetry. I posted the music/video on YouTube and of all the stuff I've put up this is the most watched. Also, don't worry about side two as it's the same thing but with instructions for turning the book pages.

GREAT GHOST STORIES

TROLL RECORDS
50-002
1973
STEREO

SIDE A:

THE MYSTERIOUS SHIPWRECK
THE GOLDEN ARM

download

SIDE B:

THE GUITAR PLAYER
HERE WE GO!

download

Editor's note: although these are the least "scary" stories of the Troll Record series that I have, they are still greatly entertaining and well-narrated. With all of the goof-ball stuff out these days it's no wonder that kids have been rendered basically brain-dead intellectually, though technically advanced. Everything has to be kewl and nothing cerebral gets by without a gimmick attached to it. Oh well, my daughter will probably shun these records when she's old enough to make up her own mind.

Editor's note: a classic re-told in a more-or-less silly manner. I guess it's for kids but I kinda preferred the blood-gushing portrayal in the Tim Burton movie.

SOUNDS TO MAKE YOU SHIVER

PICKWICK RECORDS
SPC 5101
1974
STEREO

SIDE A:

A NIGHT IN A HAUNTED HOUSE

download

SIDE B:

WITCH LAUGH
COUNT DRACULA AND HIS VICTIM
SCREAMS & GROANS
MOANS & GROANS
CATS
DOGS
BANGING SHUTTER
PHANTOM PIANO
CREAKY DOOR
BREAKING WINDOWS
THUNDER
WIND
FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER BREAKS LOOSE
HOOTING OWL

download

Editor's note: I'll be facetious here: the only thing scarier than this record is...ummm, well...the surface marks on the disc! I thought for sure that this sand-blasted marvel would skip all over the place but so far so good with just popping. I don't know what it is about the cheaply made discs but they seem less apt to skip than the top brands which skip if even a small scuff appears on the vinyl. Be sure to listen to the man-made cat and ghost sounds! TERRIBOOOO!

I never got into Georgie and listening to this I can see why! No, seriously though, I used to love Bedtime For Francis so I'm not sure why this one passed me by. I can't say that I missed much though!

SCARY SPOOKY STORIES

TROLL RECORDS
50-001
1973
STEREO

SIDE A:

THE DARE
DARK, DARK, DARK
BIG 'FRAID, LITTLE 'FRAID

download

SIDE B:

WAIT 'TIL MARTIN COMES
THE SKINNY TOE
THE THING AT THE FOOT OF THE BED

download

Editor's note: these aren't exactly SCARY scary stories but they are pretty enjoyable semi-not-really-scary stories. I guess if you're 6 then they might be scary. Luckily we're all old dudes listening to kiddie records and acting all brave and bad ass or we'd be pissing ourselves.

ONCE BITTEN

by Annabel Lamb

A&M RECORDS
SP-4969
1983
STEREO

SIDE A:

riders on the storm
once bitten
take me in your arms
heartland
backwards through the looking glass

download

SIDE B:

dividing the spoils of love
hold fast
snake pliskin
missing
no cure

download

Editor's note: Ms. Lamb's rendition of the Doors' classic "Riders on the Storm" isn't bad at all but many of the other tracks sound a bit dated in the 80s synth craze vein. As somebody wrote on the back cover "needs new mix". Specifically mix out the heavy synths, hand claps and unnecessary baggage and these songs would be much better.

IN THE BEGINNING

by Rod McKuen

SUNSET RECORDS
SUS-5273
1973
STEREO

SIDE A:

Lazy Afternoon 2:33
Jaydee 2:10
Colorado Trail 2:53
Sinner Man 3:14
Happy Is A Boy Named Me 2:07

download

SIDE B:

The Yellow Unicorn 2:55
Kearny Street 3:25
Six Songs For The Sun 5:26

download

Editor's note: within poetry circles Rod McKuen is considered a poetaster and a joke. Outside of poetry circles nobody really cares about poetry so I wouldn't take it very hard, Rod. That didn't sound right. Well, forget that, but listen...McKuen is a pretty good songwriter even if most of these songs do harken back to a bygone era.

BROTHER OF THE SON

by Don Francisco

NEW PAX RECORDS
NP33010
1976
STEREO

SIDE A:

Brother of the Son 2:57
Who You Gonna' Listen To 2:25
Closer to Jesus 3:00
I Found the Answer 3:27
Voyage to Gennesaret 2:29

download

SIDE B:

Holy Roll 2:49
The Day of the Lord 3:05
Go to Tell the Story 3:06
No Condemnation 2:59
Come and Follow 4:29

download

Editor's note: Don Francisco is the man! This record is a heavy folk sound comprised of Jesus ballads and sentiments. Some of it actually sounds like it is straight from the good book if not paraphrased from certain passages but the rest is clearly self-penned and quite good musically even if heavily laden with a religious message. Another win for the Xian Folk revolution.

ARIZONA SOUNDS VOLUME TWO

by Various Artists from KDKB 93FM

DWIGHT KARMA BROADCASTING CO.
33713
1978
STEREO

SIDE A:

City Talkin' - The Freeze Band
Banana King - The Clones
I Found Love in Front of My Face - Beggs 'N Aitken
Seacloud - Mark Murdock & Matt Niskern
On My Mind - Tom Previte & Keny Francis
Fly Me Back to Tucson - Lightnin' Stock

download

SIDE B:

High in the Highlands - Trout Fishing in America
Can't Let Go - Valley Fever
Cynthia - Wolfgang
Whiskey - Faux Pas
Can't Hold Back - Barbara Hinck
The Sticker Song - Reed Garner

download

Editor's note: oh man, the Banana King song by The Clones steals the show here. I'm surprised that nobody else has heard this tune and gone ape over it like I have. Maybe because it's not as good as I think it is. No wonder I'm prone to not listen when you people talk!

TEN TUFF GUITARS

COLUMBIA RECORDS
CL 2445
1965
STEREO

SIDE A:

FLY ME TO THE MOON
MOON RIVER
AND I LOVE HER
BLUE MOON
SHINE ON, HARVEST MOON

download

SIDE B:

MOONSHOT!
DOWNTOWN
DESAFINADO
VOLARE
MR. SANDMAN
A HARD DAY'S NIGHT

download

Editor's note: I don't know what it is about these guitar hi-fi records but they do sing for themselves. Maybe it's the old classic redone with a different medium that gives it the extra ummph. Either way it's a masculine and melodic triumph through strum-n-pluck geee-tar.

MINIMUM WAGE ROCK & ROLL

by the Bus Boys

ARISTA RECORDS
ALB6-8324
1980
STEREO

SIDE A:

DR. DOCTOR
MINIMUM WAGE
DID YOU SEE ME?
THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD
JOHNNY SOUL'D OUT
KKK

download

SIDE B:

ANGGIE
D DAY
TELL THE COACH
WE STAND UNITED
RESPECT

download

Editor's note: a few years back when I cleaned out my record collection this was one of the casualties and for some reason -- as average as this record was/is -- I had to find it again. When I finally found it I let out a chuckle and proceeded on with my dollar store findings. A b-side black version of early XTC after they let go of the steam pianist Barry Andrews and brought in Dave Gregory. Let me reiterate B-SIDE and leaning towards C-SIDE! "Did You See Me?" and "KKK" are the stand-outs for completely different reasons. "KKK" is an anti-racist anthem which adds a little controversy to a pretty vanilla album. "Did You See Me?" is basically a new wave track and stands out like a sore flange. The rest of the album is a potpourri of just about all styles of pop/rock.
