Editor's note: the first time I listened to this record I didn't quite hear the psychabilly Jesus move much inside me. This time not so much as well but it definitely has a hippy feel to the Christianity. Which is a good thing. Too many soulful crusaders and we'd merely have a glee club of heavenly harmonics. Here, we have some mournful, sinful young adults pontificating on Jesus when they don't even know who they are. Such are our travels.

Editor's note: Suicide, lesbianism, tax evasion, birth control and barbituates...it's all here! No, not on the record but by the Singing Nun who sang it. Oh, Jeanine Deckers! Of all the personalities that I've seen on these obscure records she's the last person I would have thought had a tangled life. So mote it be!
This record was a hit. Despite its success her follow up records--one promoting the GOLDEN PILL (birth control), another a disco remake of the hit track Dominique and a major release motion picture about her The Singing Nun (she called it fiction)--were flops and she faded into obscurity. Unpaid taxes from this record (she argued that she donated most to her convent) put her into financial difficulties and lead to her suicide alongside her partner (wink wink: this is the lesbian part of the story) in 1985. Who would have thunked!
PS the sound quality on this one is shite. As if you didn't already realize that. The record looks mostly umblemished so it has to be in the grooves of this FINE RECORDS NEED NOT BE EXPENSIVE lp.

Editor's note: Doug Howell might be the Jesuit Billy Joel or Bruce Hornsby but this is a professional package of not so glimmering songs. Happy, uplifting, polite and melodic to a fault. I guess I was hoping for something more melancholy, jigsawed and metallic even though "WILLIE" treads on being a coming out of the sexual closet ballad. Still, it's not enough. It kind of reminds one of the females in their lives who are entirely too friendly in social graces and then attack you in the car on the way home from the family reunion or Sunday social. I'm still expecting the stick in the eye any second here now. No, I really meant a stick, not Willie!

"DARK SHADOWS", TV's first soap opera-horror show, went on air over the ABC-TV network in June, 1966. A Dan Curtis Production, the show is now the most popular daytime TV presentation, and commands an audience of almost 20,000,000 viewers.
The series is set in a small village in Collinsport, Maine, and evolves around the lives, loves and deaths of the Collins family. "Baranabas" is played by the noted Shakespearian actor, Jonathan Frid, and "Quentin" is played by the young actor from West Virginia, David Selby. The plots weave through different generations of the Collins family, with vampires, werewolves, warlocks, witches, phoenixes, gypsies, coffins, ghosts, secret rooms, and the world of the supernatural predominating.
The suspenseful background music, which has become as familiar to the viewers as some of the most popular songs of today, was composed, conducted and arranged by Robert Cobert, a Julliard graduate, who has scored more television shows than any other composer. His music encompasses the widest range of styles and sounds: electronic, rock, weird, dramatic, popular and classical. In the background music of "Dark Shadows", Cobert masterfully utilizes varied combinations of[sic] from two musicians to a full symphony orchestra in creating the many moods of the action at Collinwood.

Editor's note: greatness prevails here! I've always wanted to see this series but can't find it to rent and am way too cheap to buy it. This only intensifies my wanting. Great mood music, cheesy poetic monologues and a general spookiness of creaking bones, instruments and your fat black heart into melodramatic darkness. Bwahahahahaha.Apparently the show was so big that there were stuffed heads of the favorite characters! For only $2.99 you could have had yourself a collector's item that hopefully no human still owns!

Editor's note: a little tumescence for ye tongue, madame? Filthy, eh? You bet. So why then does an album with bawdy "rapp" songs start off with an 8:42 instrumental? It's a weird world my man and I won't even begin to guess the reasoning. Maybe it was to lessen the BLOW of what follows. Which in current terms of raunchiness is rather tame but for the times was a media pandora's box which wasn't to be opened. You have better things to consider anyhow. Like who Blowfly is and how he came to be. Let the Wikipedia people enlighten you on that. I'm just an archivist.
PS...sorry for the occasional skip and roughness but this record and especially the sleeve were threadbare, unkempt and raggedy. I salvaged it for THE PEOPLE. Yeah, who's kidding who...I'm just obsessed.

Editor's note: this is a pretty interesting record especially for 1984. You have to think that if they would have gotten some press as a new band in the 90s they might have been more successful. As is they have a unique minimalist sound with the vocals carrying much of the load though the prominently featured instrument of choice provides a carriage of rhythm. Sometimes it crashes and burns but sometimes it glides elegantly into frivolity and that's good enough for me. I must admit that when I first started listening I thought that the record was on the wrong speed! Shows my musical acumen. Ooooof!
PS...the backing vocals/groans on "Day Old Whale" are brilliant!

In 1984 I started out on a Vietnam Veterans March for school prayer. That march which was to go from Tennessee to Washington, D. C. has taken me a lot further than I ever planned. I discovered that the plight of the Vietnam Vets is universal and everybody needs the dignity of self that comes with the love of God. Heroes exist within themselves and their relationship to the Lord, regardless of their acknowledgement by their fellow man.
I believe as a country, America must get "Back to the Basics." First, the BIBLE as the foundation we must build upon. Second, the FLAG as a symbol that we are truly "One Nation Under God." Finally the PENNY with the inscription "In God We Trust" which bears witness to our forefathers faith in the providence and sovereignty of our Almighty God.
America! Millions have paid a price for our freedom. It's imperative that we preserve and defend our heritage.

Editor's note: this guy is great! Not his music but him. The man went to war, came back and had a dream to be a modern rocking country balladeer and then procured a label to do it! Indeedy do he did it. You can (well, I did anyway!) hear some Neil Diamond, Lionel Ritchie and various mod poppers in here as well a 90s country-pop crossover in both feel and style. Kinda like The Fixx meets Bruce Hornsby and one of the plethora of country-pop singers tossed in. And to think that I thought I'd found a Vince McMahon WWF album from the 80s when I first saw it. Isn't that tribute enough to R. K. Fraser?!?!
