In October of 1970, the Singing Stepps reorganized their group with Bob Dildine joining them singing first tenor.

Featuring Bob's deep vibrant voice on the song entitled "The Eastern Gates", gave this album its title. Bob is a consecrated Christian, as well as all members of the Singing Stepps. They believe you must possess God's diving power in your life to make gospel singing a blessing to humanity and to reach lost souls.

As you listen to their recording, try to visualize the "Eastern Gates". Think of the joy of that glad reunion when we'll meet our friends and loved ones on the other side beyond the gates. The Bible states in Revelations that the gates of the city shall not be shut at all by day for there shall be no night. It also reads nothing that defileth can enter therein, only those who have their names written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

Friends, as you concentrate on the joyous sounds of the Singing Stepps, ask yourself the question, "Am I prepared to enter the Eastern Gates?"

The rockabilly kicks in on "I'm Gonna Leave Here Shouting" and although it makes no reprise various twanging guitars and folksy choruses do and often. Put a Revivalist Church in a 1950s Nashville recording studio and this record could be your vinyl and cardboard temple.

GEORGE ZAMBETAS composer, singer, virtuoso of the bouzouki is one of the most sought-after musicians of popular music in Greece. His records, mostly his own compositions, are popular throughout Europe, and his name is synonymous with the bouzouki.

In 1959 he was playing in a small night club when he was asked to join Manos Hadjidakis, Melina Mercouri and Jules Dassin in the film "Never On Sunday." Immediately, the fantastic technique of Zambetas's bouzouki playing caught on and he was acclaimed internationally; since then he has worked with all the Greek composers and has recorded many of their works. His own compositions have also become popular and are written in a style based on the songs of cabarets or more accurately the laiko traqoudi (popular songs). He has also written music for movies and the theatre. With all this talent in one man, Zambetas remains the same Zambetas through all his success: humble, a man filled with kefi (love of life) and the word which in Greek most describes manliness...LEVANDIA!

Editor's note: I want to say that this is a hybrid between a hybrid of The Sisters of Mercy and Adam Ant but I think that generalizes things a bit too much. Plus I have no real music knowledge and those are easy names to throw and look smart using. A great sounding EP though the content starts out relatively strong and waters itself down to the last blaring synthesizer. Worth the 20 minute listen just to acclimate yourself with something from the 80s which wasn't all big hair and sentiment.

JUST THE WORD:

Several years ago a group of students on the campus of John Brown University created a musical group known as the "Sound Generation". Initially the group lacked virtually all the necessary ingredients for success, but the members of the "Sound Generation" believed that they had a story to tell and a song to sing. In the retrospect of the years, it was certainly of our mission and a blind faith in God, that enabled the group to wade through the often chilly waters of our initial ventures.

From that time until this, virtually everything about the group has changed, everything that is except our reason for existence. The group was born out of a desire to tell of our love for God and country; that desire is still the central pillar of our being.

THE ADAGE STATES THAT: "Music is the expression of the soul." This album is the soul expression of the 24 young people who created it. It is not music for music's sake; but rather an effort to communicate and to share the deep "heart-felt" feelings that burn within the souls of the members of the "Sound Generation."

The album touches all the spheres of musical involvement that have become synonymous with the "Sound Generation" through the past years. The sound ranges from the driving beat pf "California Soul" to the easy melodic line of "Who Can Cheer the Heart Like Jesus."

The album is a kaleidoscope of sound and it is hoped that somewhere on the record there is that certain something that you will like a great deal.

It is our jope and prayer that each and every listener will be drawn closer to God and to the realization that He is vitally interested in the affairs of mankind and that through the person of Jesus Christ, He has provided a way for us to know Him.

In the creation of this album, special credit must go to the following:

JOHN COATES: Who is not only the musical director of the group, he has been, from the beginning, the musical mind that has charted the basic course for the group to follow. Johnny, musically speaking, has written the majority of the group's arrangements and does all the keyboard work on the recording.

PAUL WHEELR: Paul sings baritone/bass, and is also responsible for the selection and training of all vocalists. His ability and the end result is easily heard.

ROGER BYRD: Affectionately referred to as "Byrd" by all his friends, drills and trains the "Sound Generation" band and is the featured "skin man" or drummer in the group. For the album, he also covered much of the trombone work and "California Soul" is a product of his arranging genius.

MR. STEWART SPRINGFIELD - Vice President of John Brown Univeersity, without whose help and guidance we never would have made it;

MR E. WILLIAM GEORGE, John Brown University West Coast President...our "Big Daddy" in the southern California area who just has to be the grooviest guy in the world;

It is a fully accredited, four-year, liberal arts University, that is in existence today basically to train young people academically and spiritually for a 20th Century world. It is thrilling for us to know that the University has been successful in doing just that for more than half a century.

Winner of the 1969-71 "Slow Talkers of America" championship and reformed M&M addict. "As a lead, he makes a pretty good bass." Alumnus of no fewer than several colleges and universities. Once considered career as a perpetual sophomore.

Jay Giallombardo

Undoubtedly one of the true creative geniuses in Barbershop today...has a masters degree in theory and composition, "He's O.K., I guess." Possessed of a personal magnetism second to many, and a last name mispelled often enough to attract Guinness' attention.

John Miller

Disciplined and industrous, handsome and dashing, former sermonette producer and Charles Atlas "before" model. "A truly mediocre stand-up comic." Currently one of Chicago's "Ten scrawniest bachelors."

When Lindy Comes Home: A tribute to Lindberg by George M. Cohan was unearthed in a stack of old sheet music at SPEBSQSA's Harmony Hall.
Moonlight Brings Memories: Once considered as a possible title song for this album, but the art would have been either lewd or ludicrous.
I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles: We're not sure just how far back this little variation might be traceable, but, contrary to popular belief, Lawrence Welk had nothing to do with it.
Tonight: A Jay G. special arranged to show off the rest of Hank's voice, the best of Jim's voice while John stands in the back going doo-wah, doo-wah.
Shillelagh Stick: Hard to figure how you can romanticize a big chunk of gnarled tree root...but, here it is.

Before the Parade Passes By: Dolly Levi made it famous, Jay made it Barbershop (sort of), and the rest of us are just trying to sing it.
A Song for Mary: One-half of our "Dough Boy" contest set...seen by many and loved by several (General Pershing not included).
Firefly: A hot little number with no deep intellectual or emotional commitment necessary (or possible).
When I Fall in Love: Hank's Dad always asks for this one 'cause it makes him cry. We sang it at Hank's wedding, which made Hank cry.
Rosie(You Made Me Love You): Quick! Who arranged this one? (All entries must be received before the solo).

Editor's note: an album with an international hit is hardly an obscurity despite the band being one for the most part. Much of that could be attributed to them be Canadian. It's fairly hard for even the most successful Canadian bands to crack the seemingly impenetrable wall of Americanization. Thus an American obscurity may be a Canadian staple. That might be the case here because I'd never heard of these guys until I found this record.

As this review from 1971 attests to, this band had one happy moment with "One Fine Morning" and many more not so pleasant ones throughout their haul as The Guess Who Jr. "Little Kind Words" is an excellent tune but so far I'm rather underwhelmed. A professional album but like there are many good painters there are only a few Picassos and Dalis. In those terms this would be a Grandma Moses Lite.

Editor's note: Bruce Roberts? Think skinny black dude with a 5 o'clock shadow who wears gauze thin khakis and stretched open silk shirts while belting out his heartfelt R&jazz&B tune on some Caribbean island with an exotic looking woman who is seemingly unaffected frolicking in the surf. Wrong guy. This is a straight-laced white guy who looks like a college professor in a smoking jacket. The music's not quite "ME" but the jacket is superb. Both album and personal attire! For several years, i have watched with great interest the ministry of Dr. Jack Van Impe. I have listened to him preach. I have studied his personal life. I have observed the mighty hand of God upon him.

I believe the Lord has selected Dr. Jack Van Impe for a national and, perhaps, international ministry. Without question, he is one of the greatest preachers of our generation. He is a "walking Bible." He quotes 8,000 verses by memory. The Holy Spirit is upon him in a powerful fashion. I have, therefore, along with many others, urged Dr. Jack Van Impe to champion the cause of cooperative, mass evangelism for fundamental, Bible-believing churches and Christians across America. I believe that Dr. Van Impe is an uncompromising man of God.

He is a young man--only 39 years of age. He is respected and loved by the young people of our nation. He is a fantastic musician. His wife, Rexella, is one of the sweetest Christians I have ever known. They set a wonderful example for the sanctity of marriage and the home.

I believe this recording will manifest to all the magnificent ministry of Dr. Van Impe. I pray it will enjoy a wide circulation.

Editor's note: I once wrote an e-mail to Mr. Van Impe and told him that even though I didn't much believe in the religious movement I was all in favor of defeating the New World Order. He proceeded to quote it on the air and blessed me and my tribulations. I now bless you with one of his poignant sermons. You don't have to believe either but you ought to listen.
