Editor's note: Dickie Goodman is the first known recording artist to sample other songs within a piece of original work. By our standards these records sound rather cut and pasted though for the time they were very innovative. His first record, "The Flying Saucer,"...co-written with partner Bill Buchanan, and featured a description of a news-covered invasion of earth from a Martian space ship. While Goodman asked questions of pedestrians, scientists, and even the Martian himself, their responses were 'snipped' from lyrics of popular songs of the day, including tracks from Fats Domino, Elvis Presley and Little Richard." got him into legal trouble. He was sued by the various record companies for copyright infringement. A judge ruled in Goodman's favor citing that the "break-in" records were parodies and burlesques and not plagiarism. The matter was later settled outside of court.

Mr. Jaws, an obvious parody of the movie Jaws, went to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The B-side, "Irv's Theme", according to Wikipedia is "the same as 'Herb's Theme'. Someone probably mis-heard the title before printing the label for one or the other. Dickie came up with the name for this label when someone asked who to make a check out to."

Sadly, Goodman died in 1989 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. For more on his life and work check out this article.

Editor's note: now that's the gospel! Bluegrass and strumming along singing the Lord's praise and prayers. A few of these guys are still playing in organized bands and the others could just as well be for all I know. Listen and enjoy because next Sunday you're getting a stern warning from Mr. Van Impe. You've been warned!

GULIVER

YUYO VERDE (GREEN SHRUB)
MI PIANO CANTA PARA TI (MY PIANO SINGS FOR YOU)

download

Editor's note: this one is pretty hit or miss. Some tracks are very good (JAMAQUEATE & HOJAS MUERTAS) but most are just your garden variety island music mostly played in a lounge style. I don't really know what else to say about it other than that. Oh yeah, the last track sounds a little Ricky Ricardo-ish if that makes it any more enchanting for you all.

Editor's note: this is a brilliant folk rock album. I don't know where this dude came from or went to but this a great testimony for a life's passion as music surely is with him. I did do a google search on his name and found a court case vs. the US gov't so maybe he's off fighting the man. I couldn't tell you but the man can't stop this record. I hope.

LONELY HARPSICHORD: RAINY NIGHT IN SHANGRI-LA

DREAM THEME 2:10
MIDNIGHT HIDEAWAY 2:20

download

Editor's note: this album is all wrong! Side two is the harpsichord side while side one dabbles in it but the overall tone on it is banal piano music played on a harpsichord. I'm sure the brain trust behind it thought that there should be a gradual build up alongside the rainstorm ambiance but by the time the torrent arrives the girl on the front cover sucking her finger is eating ice cream and watching Dark Shadows, the mood having passed her by.

Editor's note: this ill-fated Pasha outfit from Canada probably never really had a chance to be what they wanted to be. I say this because another band on the Pasha label, Rhythm Corps, was a Detroit act that had their songs butchered by the meat-cutters there at the record company. I was privy to knowing a band member and heard many of the band's demos and they blew away the final product. Not only that but the songs left off the records were often times obvious cuts that should have made it. Anyhow, I'm sure these guys like most other bands were dealt this dictatatorial hand and folded because of it. Which is why I stick with records nowadays and will never buy another CD again (until my daughter asks for them when she gets older :)).

RUN FOR DAYLIGHT - Song (3:15)

download

Editor's note: a football comedy album! Hell, here in Detroit football is a comedy of errors. No joke. But in honor of the start of the exhibition season here you go. Outside of the half dozen or so skips on the first side there are bad football-related jokes, racist sketches and lots of canned laughter. All perfect ingredients for a late-night World's Funniest Videos episode. There are a few laughs in here but you have to listen all the way through to catch them. Bring your stick-em because you'll need it.

REFLECTIONS (For Grandmother)

by Pat D'Aguanno

MUSICARD SALES/EVA TONE
1976
STEREO

SIDE A:

download

Editor's note: and you thought your mp3 birthday card you gave your chica was cool with a K! How about a flexi 45 record then, dude? Talk about dedication to receiving a present. Not only did you have to open up the turn table but then you had to sit through a generic greeting given to other grandmothers as well. Yet, I still like the concept. If I could get enough money saved for a frivolity I think I might press 500 records of my little girl just being herself. How cute would that be?

STEREO

SIDE A:

IT'LL BE WORTH EVERY MILE OF THE TRIP
HE'LL BE THERE TO SEE ME THRU 2:50

I KNOW I'M SAVED 1:57
MEDLEY ABOUT HEAVEN 3:45
BETTER FARTHER ON 3:11
O, WHAT A DAY 2:22

download

Editor's note: these grand gals sure could belt out the gospel for Jesus. As of 2002 some form of The Burns Trio was still performing according to this church bulletin. I don't know if it was the same line up shown on the LP cover or a second generation kind of deal but if it was the original then these grand gals must be grand grand grand gals by now.

A side note to my scant research on this record: Rev. Ralph Sexton, Sr., pictured with the gals, was known as a fiery public preacher and apparently in his early 20s he published a book called "Church Asses" which is up for sale on eBay. It's only $2.50! They were some of his favorite "clean" singers so maybe you can make him one of your "grittier" preachers.

SIDE A:

TATUSIU
I'M A DOCTOR
SILK HANDKERCHIEF

download

SIDE B:

FRANCES
HAPPY DAY
GREEN GRASS
DOUBLECROSS
LITTLE POLISH GIRL
YOUNG and GAY

download

Editor's note: this album is a bit of a misnomer as it should be called The Syl Rutkowski Orchestra with Token Appearances by the Little Polish Girl because she hardly sings on it! The one time she does on SIDE A it's a wedding song and she's singing as a 19 year old girl who is about to be hitched. Ummm, yeah...a little creepy to package it this way. That and the first song is called HE LIKES THE GIRLIES and is sung by some guy with a hormonal swagger. Which is all fine and dandy but not on an album called LITTLE POLISH GIRL! No no...I'm not suggesting anything is afoot just that it's a bit bizarre. Anyhow, a pretty snappy polka LP but it would have been better if the little girl were the actual star and could actually be heard when she sang and not so much good old Syl despite his obvious genius for polka. I mean, polka's polka but add a dog, a little kid or a banjo and it's polkalicious. Now who sounds like the weirdo, huh?!?!

TIM HAZEL

download

SIDE B:

Green Grass of Home
Cracklin Rosie
Singing the Blues
Everybody's Talking

Editor's note: with a blank back cover and only a newspaper clipping to surmise from after Google came up with no specific search results, I can only guess that Mr. Hazel was a local Detroiter active on the bar scene as a cover artist. I think the newspaper article refers to his supporting band as Brush Creek but I can't be sure since it is a little tattered at the end where the pertinent information is. Anyhow, his band mates were: Charlie Jakubowski, Marcia Clum and Duane Wiggs. Maybe one of them will do a search and find this and spill the beans about the whole Tim Hazel experience.

Editor's note: haha, somebody's frisky aren't they. A song called "You Sure Love To Ball"; a man-slave on the ground begging for Sylvia's touch; golden, sparkling adornments and all the colors of hell make this one sultry LP. She wants you! You know you want her too.

JOY

by Apollo 100 featuring Tom Parker

MEGA RECORDS
M31-1010
1972
STEREO

Lord Kenneth Clark, of "Civilization" fame, said of Johann Sebastian Bach: "He is the spectator of all musical time and existence, to whom it is not of the smallest importance whether a thing be new or old, so long as it is true."

This most listenable Apollo 100 album owes much to the group's hit, "Joy," written by J. S. Bach as "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring."

Careful research suggests this is what Bach himself might say of Apollo 100:

"Here are some accomplished British musicians respecting the actual music, but tastefully innovating, as with sax and vibes on my 'Air for the G String' and organ, harpsichord, and brass on my 'Joy.' Tom Parker also beautifully arranges works by Mendelssohn, Grieg, Saint-Saens, and Leroy Anderson, as well as material by himself and other contemporary composers, as in the soaring 'Reach for the Sky.' This is made possible as an album by Mega, which means million; and I doubt not that there will be 1,000,000 sales.

"Considering everything here, I remember I once said: 'The aim of final reason of all music should be none else than the Glory of God and the recreation of the mind.'"

--J. S. Bach

Thank you for everything, Mr. Bach!

Editor's note: in my uneducated opinion, jazz has always been the classical music drop-out genre. Not that many or most jazz musicians couldn't have been classical players but they chose to bud the seedier side of the garden instead. Seeing as classical music is the only true music, I tend to classify all other music as elemental fringe. Perhaps good but never the greatness of the masters. This is a pretty good record nonetheless. A nice companion piece to chocolate pudding and Pilsner Urquell on a sunny springtime Sunday afternoon.

PS...who is this Tom Parker chap? There's only scant info on him on the internet. No offense, but he looked a little alternative to say the least. Interesting as well.

Editor's note: this guy apparently was a leading comic in the 1950s and 60s. In fact, he was a candidate to take over the Tonight Show, having served as a guest host on occasion, but was beaten out by Johnny Carson for the spot. This record, by many accounts, is one of the first comedy albums ever put out, preceding even Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart and the other leading comics of the day. I don't find it particularly funny but that doesn't mean that you won't laugh you dinky minx!

Editor's note: here...let somebody with actual musical knowledge tell you just who Latimore Brown was/is. I'll just spin the record and let you know that it feels like hot summer music. You're listening to a crackling radio and pressing your forehead against the frosted window of the freezer trying to make sense of why all of this nothingness of existence feels quite all right. The vocal is most remarkable though there is some tackiness trying to pass itself off as seduction but it doesn't quite work except to amuse me.

Editor's note: a cross between a humorless Serge Gainsbourg and an Italian Elvis Costello with Latin roots. Of course I have no clue what he's singing about so it's all speculation on my part. Other than that you can make up your own mind. I didn't mind it at all.
