THE SEA OF LOVE

by The Adventures

ELEKTRA RECORDS
60772-1
1988
STEREO

SIDE A:

DROWNING IN THE SEA OF LOVE
BROKEN LAND
YOU DON'T HAVE TO CRY ANYMORE
THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL (WHEN THE RAIN COMES DOWN)

download

SIDE B:

HEAVEN KNOWS WHICH WAY
HOLD ME NOW
THE SOUND OF SUMMER
WHEN YOUR HEART WAS YOUNG
ONE STEP FROM HEAVEN

download

Editor's note: a late 80s band that had some success in the UK but almost none in the US. Which speaks to why I have never heard of these guys despite their being a pretty good outfit. Side 1 is the pathos of the album whereas side 2 is the bathos and the record goes from pretty good to very average with the flip of the disc.

INAUGURAL ADDRESSES

US NAVY
41242
1970s
MONO

SIDE A:

Franklin D. Roosevelt 8:02
Harry S. Truman 6:28
Dwight D. Eisenhower 7:46
John F. Kennedy 7:10

download

SIDE B:

Lyndon B. Johnson
Richard M. Nixon 16:15

download

Editor's note: shysters, all of them! Except for maybe JFK who took a bullet because he wanted to limit the Federal Reserve and restore some hard backing to the currency. Other than that he was most likely part of the shadow government as well. It doesn't really matter though since he could give a damn decent speech here and there and that's what this is all about.

THE LONE RANGER

SPECIAL RECORDINGS
LP-1001
1950s?

SIDE A:

ADVENTURE NO. 2

download

SIDE B:

ADVENTURE NO. 1

download

Editor's note: I apologize for the few skips on both sides but the record is laden with scratches and scuffs. This record was well before my time but it's still nice to hear two original and complete radio broadcasts. It's odd to think that radio was the television and computer of its time but it was. Odder to think that cowboys and indians were still a hot topic in the early quarter of last century.

JOHN BENTLEY & HIS BUDDIES

with Guy "the Bear" Richards, Roosevelt Sykes, Dave Gary, Babe Stovall

EUPHONIC SOUND RECORDINGS
ESR-1211
1976

SIDE A:

Trouble In Mind
Something A-Swiss
Cocaine Blues
Down The Road Aways
Two Fifths
Ships Is At The Landing
It Ain't Much

download

SIDE B:

Can't Judge A Book
How Long Blues
Roll & Tumble
Trouble In Mind
Folsom Prison Blues
West Helena Fish Fry

download

Editor's note: I hope that somebody out there likes piano because I have about 10 of these records from the Euphonic's Piano Series and have just begun to crack them open and shall do so once a week or so. The good part besides the music is that most are in very nice shape and have only been played lightly. I'm liking what I'm hearing so far.

WINNIE THE POOH AND TIGGER

DISNEYLAND RECORDS
DQ-1317
1968

SIDE A:

A RATHER BLUSTERY DAY
THE WONDERFUL THING ABOUT TIGGERS TIGGER SONG REPRISE
THE RAIN RAIN RAIN CAME DOWN DOWN DOWN
HIP HIP POOH RAY

download

SIDE B:

WHERE OH WHERE
WHO'S AT RABBIT TABLE?
WHERE IS THE HONEY TREE?
BIRTHDAY, BIRTHDAY
WINNIE THE POOH

download

Editor's note: some storyline on the first side but mostly the songs from the cartoon which many who watched remember. I just didn't remember W.T.P. being a dunce although I guess I recall he was obsessed with honey and often got lost in that endeavor. A nice record for the keeeeeds.

ANDALUSIAN AND FLAMENCO DANCES VOL. 2

arranged by Marquita Flores/Music adapted and composed by John Childs

S&R RECORDS
NO. 419
1973

SIDE A:

ZAMBRA
PASO DOBLE
SOLEARES
FANDANGO

download

SIDE B:

Alegrias
Ferruca
Seguidillas Manchegas
Sevillanans
Zorongo en Bulerias
Ritmos

download

Editor's note: you may not like the style of dance but you cannot easily dispose of the very excellent piano playing and scoring by John Childs which steals the whole show. I expected something very different than this and almost passed on this quarter record for that very exact expectation. It's a good thing that I didn't because it's a seriously beautiful record.

DUMB POET

by Immaculate Fools

A&M RECORDS
SP6-5151
1987
STEREO

SIDE A:

Never Give Less Than Everything 4:33
Tragic Comedy 4:17
One Minute 3:20
Dumb Poet 6:13
So Much Here 2:52

download

SIDE B:

Wish You Were Here 4:51
Don't Drive The Hope From My Heart 4:30
Pretty Prize Now 5:14
Stay Away 6:49

download

Editor's note: man, I'm coming to realize that many of the bands from the 1980s which didn't make it big all kind of sounded like The Fixx! Which makes sense since The Fixx didn't make it as big as they should have considering how many classic songs they put out. Other than that they are pretty much a power pop group which comes off a little too lite for my tastes.

ENVIRONMENTS 11

SYNTONIC RESEARCH INC.
SD66011
1979
STEREO

SIDE A:

ALPINE BLIZZARD

download

SIDE B:

COUNTRY THUNDERSTORM

download

Editor's note: as is the case with all of these Environment records you either like them for what they aren't doing or hate them for what they are. A lot of people only want records to play music but I'm not one of those. I like them because they are non-traditional and aren't music. I actually prefer spoken word records the best but limiting myself to just that would make for a fairly boring record blog now wouldn't it?

THE RETURN OF THE CREPITATION CONTEST

by Robert Wotherspoon

LAFF RECORDS
A-193
1976

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's note: I'm sure that in 1976 that this was funny to a growing legion of Howard Stern types but for myself it's pretty craptacular! Yeah, I love Howard Stern but the two things about his show that always made me turn the dial were the farting shows and interviews with porn stars. I really hate porn stars! Not that I haven't watched some porn in my time but I just hate their stupidity levels and their "great business sense". Uhhh...yeah. Anyhow, farting contests also are just submoronic if taken beyond a one minute sketch or so. This is old school comedy so I won't be so harsh on it plus I like the name Lord Windesphere for some odd reason.

I'm Movin' On 2:04
Steel Guitar Rag 2:35
Spanish Fireball 2:17
Ritual Fire Dance 4:05

download

Editor's note: a jingly-jangly, thumpity-ump guitar slingin' extravaganza through ten staples of music history that do not disappoint like most of its ilk doesn't.

THE MANCHESTER ANGEL

by Ewan MacColl w/ Peggy Seeger guitar, dulcimer and concertina

TRADITION RECORDS
TR 2059
1968
STEREO

SIDE A:

We Poor Labouring Men
Georgie
Barbara Allen

SIDE B:

To The Begging I Will Go

The Manchester Angel
The Bold Richard
The Press Gang
Round Cape Horn
Through Moorfields
Homeward Bound

download

Editor's note: didn't Nietzsche say that the only thing more boring than an Englishman is another Englishman? If not, he should have. This record is so dreary in parts that I almost forgot that I am sweating through a hot Michigan summer and not living near a moat in the foggy cool English countryside. I'm not a big fan of folk music because I mostly hate story poem songs but this guy is good at what he does. Saying that I don't like it is no crime.
