THIS LOVE IS MINE (3:52)
GOD'S GUIDING HAND (3:38)
JUST A CLOSER WALK WITH THEE (3:37)

SIDE B:

UNTIL THEN (4:02)
HE RULES THE WORLD (4:10)
FOLLOW ME (4:23)
I ASKED THE LORD (3:17)
IF YOU KNOW THE LORD (2:15)

download

Editor's note: Laverne, your singing isn't quite up to par on parts of this record but the glorious cover art has won me over. Not that I'm into religious records. Hell, I'm not even into religion. Then again, I'm not into agnosticism or atheism either. In fact, I hate most of those people simply because they are the cult worshipers that they claim most Christians are. As I said, I'm a bad atheist because I have no animosity towards religion. Well, I hate Buddha just because he's a fat bastard and looks like your aunt Flo but that's just an aesthetics thing with me I suppose.

NIKKI: WILD DOG OF THE NORTH

read by Thurl Ravenscroft, music by Paul J. Smith

DISNEYLAND RECORDS
ST-1913
1959

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's note: this record is brutal and I mean that in a good way. The story is tough, the participants are strong (even against adversity) and motherfuckers have to die. This one kid of shocked me considering the sugar-coated, mind-controlled children's programs of today.

Editor's note: if I could avoid getting sick every time I have a day off I would never miss a day of posting but it just doesn't seem in the cards. Not that you were clamoring for this classic but you get what you get. Quentin's Theme, a track from the Dark Shadows soundtrack appears here as well as on Charles Randolph Grean's release on the same label.

MEDEA

by Robinson Jeffers and starring Judith Anderson

DECCA RECORDS
DLP 9000

SIDE A:

ACT I

download

SIDE B:

ACT II

download

Editor's note: if you think that poetry and theater is for emo pussies then you're fairly dead-nuts correct. One of the exceptions to this rule is Robinson Jeffers. The guy hated humanity for its inbred slavishness to primate values. Violence, irrationality, tribalism, etc. His answer to it all was to counteract each savage act with further severity and then just watch it from the side dreaming of nirvana. Or something like that.

SOUND EFFECTS VOLUME 3

AUDIO FIDELITY RECORDS
DFS 7011
SUPER-STEREO

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's notes: after listening to about 40 seconds of this album I should have stopped the recording due to the rough shape it's in but I chose to continue. The loud parts show the super-stereo potential but the pops and crackle drown out the delicate sounds which encompass most of the record. Oh well. If it makes you feel any worse the photos look as if a cyclops clicked his gleaming eyeball after refracting into a carnival trick mirror. So mote it be.

BEND DOWN AND TOUCH ME

by Rod McKuen, sung by Glenn Yarbrough

SIDE B:

I Think Of You
Meantime
A Boy Named Charlie Brown
The Ivy That Clings To The Wall
Lonesome Cities
Champion Charlie Brown
Kaleidoscope Notes

download

Editor's note: this is not a good album. In fact it's so bad that it's hardly an album at all. It's greeting card verse set to music. The singing and playing  are okay if you're into the Afternoon Special upbeat positive butter churning bullshit. Otherwise, it's pure rubbish. Though, I Think of You is passable as a love song for a hooker.

Editor's note: We've all got a little Jew in us don't we? I know that I do. Maybe not in the religious aspect but definitely in the lineage from one side of my family. Not that it matters since I neither don a beanie nor am I a money changer. I do like bagels if that counts though I'm watching my sodium and pass on them 99% of the time. Anyway, this spiel is going nowhere but since I don't remember much of anything from listening to the record last night I thought I'd bullshit my way through the review.

JOKE ALONG WITH JIMMY NELSON AND HIS FRIENDS

by Jimmy Nelson and his friends

PETER PAN RECORDS
PP 8002

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's note: I wouldn't exactly call this a comedy album but there are a few zingers that would probably make kids from the 1950s laugh. Now you have to say motherfucker every five seconds to be a comedian. Which, compared to this canned laughter enterprise, isn't necessarily a bad thing. Ironically, some of the characters on this record sound like members of the Howard Stern show past and present. Or vice versa as it were.

PRESENTING THE VAN IMPES

by Jack and Rexella Van Impe

CROWN V RECORDS
CV 1003

SIDE A:

THE ASSURANCE MARCH
THE OLD RUGGED CROSS
FOLLOW ME
YOUNG PEOPLE'S MEDLEY
JERICHO ROAD
SAVED

download

SIDE B:

THE HOLY CITY
WONDERFUL GRACE OF JESUS
TRIESTE OVERTURE
NO ONE EVER CARED FOR ME LIKE JESUS
MANSION OVER THE HILLTOP
V IS FOR VICTORY

download

Editor's note: I'm not really into television evangelists as much as I am the folksy ones on small town radio but Jack Van Impe is the exception. His pansophistic knowledge of The Bible and opposition to the New World Order are the main appeals but his sincerity in the message warms my atheist heart to overflowing. I even wrote Jack an e-mail 15 or so years ago that he read portions of on the air making me believe that he didn't actually have many viewers but who knows. It was an honor to be in his prayers despite not believing in the religious cause. The record is okay but nothing spectacular. Rexella sings better than I would have expected and Jack's playing is bit more frivolous than the dirges that I expected. After having a severely scratched and unplayable copy for years I managed to snag this at an estate sale recently for 50 cents. Score!

RICHARD ELLSASSER PLAYS THE CONN ORGAN

by Richard Ellsasser

SACRED RECORDS
LPS 4039
STEREO
1964

SIDE A:

Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken (2:12)
Brother James' Air (3:00)
Once to Every Man and Nation (2:15)
Fairest Lord Jesus (3:13)
A Mighty Fortress (1:45)

download

SIDE B:

The Lord's Prayer (3:18)
I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked (4:41)
Prelude on Greensleeves (5:20)
The Lost Chord (4:18)
Hallelujah Chorus ("Messiah") (3:40)

download

Editor's note: despite this being a religious record the cover gave me the same spiritual feeling of greatness as Luther Henderson's hand-clapping slapper-do cover did. As with that recording I was also left disappointed here. Not because it isn't a solid effort but it promised more than it delivered. This one is heavy on the churchy feel when I wished to be irradiated by a steam piano from Hell. Oh well. I still like the cover. According to a classical music forum (: |) his album "Richard Ellsasser Plays the Baldwin Electronic Organ" was termed "ghastly". Which is all the more reason to track it down.

Offertoire (4:36)
Le Chant Du Vent (2:17)
Rossignolet (The Nightingale) (3:21)
Adago Nobile (4:13)

download

SIDE B:

Romance / Hebrew Song (6:38)
Sketches for Flute Alone: No: I. Announcement (1:18)
Sketches for Flute Alone: No: II. Soliloquy (2:00)
Sketches for Flute Alone: No: III. Flirtation (1:27)
Sketches for Flute Alone: No: IV. Night-life (1:56)
Sketches for Flute Alone: No: V. Frolic (0:40)
Bolero (4:49)

download

Editor's note: just because this dude gives the come hither look and has sassafras flow it takes nothing away from his ability to play. He's a renown flutist and there will likely be a copyright infringement claim against this post in due time. Nonetheless, you don't make a cover like that unless you want to make the cheesecake hall of fame.

Editor's note: Miss Charlene tries way too hard to be cool and sexy. It doesn't work. But it is kind of interesting in a very cheesecake sort of way.

...TO GOD BE THE GLORY

by Bill Park with the Bob Cline Singers

RAINBOW RECORDS
R-2190
STEREO

SIDE A:

My Tribute (To God Be The Glory) (2:44)
One Day Too Late (4:34)
The King Is Coming (2:55)
New 23rd (1:55)
What About You (3:48)

SIDE B:

Follow Me (3:45)
Ten Thousand Years (3:05)
It's A Privilege (2:49)
Something Beautiful (3:40)
This Could Be The Dawning (2:20)

Editor's note: this guy has both a Morrissey and Elvis vibe going here. At least to me he does. His vocal inflections are the former and the timbre with the King. Of course, Bill is singing to the King of Kings. Which is something us heathens can't understand. well, we could but don't. Either way, my daughter thinks Bill's caricature on the cover is creepy and gives this effort a thumbs down without even hearing it. Having heard Bill I can sing his praises in the affirmative.

HESSE BETWEEN MUSIC

read by Fred Haines, music by the Group Between

CAEDMON RECORDS
TC 1516
STEREO
1977

SIDE A:

Aphorism/Clouds/Allegory (4:10)
Whistlin'/Life Story Briefly Told/Jesus Was Twelve (2:24)
From Martin's Diary (1:20)
Happiness/The Essential (0:56)
Chinese Legend (2:47)
Suicide (10:41)

download

SIDE B:

The Ballad Of The Classical Poet/A Poke In The Eye (3:04)
World Betterment/Marx And Me (2:13)
Organ Playing/Consciousness (7:23)
The World Is Lying Broken (1:26)
The Ferryman/Siddhartha's Face (6:50)
Death Song Of The Poet (1:44)

download

Editor's note: this is a great record in spite of itself. Being that Hesse's words are way too emo for the music and the music isn't exactly Mozart. But somehow if you want a hipster sound and pre-beatnik words you've arrived. What I'm saying is that I like the concept but not so much the content if that makes sense.

MR. SPOCK'S MUSIC FROM OUTER SPACE

by Leonard Nimoy

DOT RECORDS
DLP 25794
STEREO

Alien (1:57)
Where Is Love (1:50)
Music To Watch Space Girls By (2:17)
Beyond Antares (2:03)
Twinkle, Twinkle Little Earth (2:12)

download

SIDE B:

Mission Impossible (1:58)
Lost In The Stars (2:25)
Where No Man Has Gone Before (2:24)
You Are Not Alone (2:02)
A Visit To A Sad Planet (2:50)

download

Editor's note: Apparently you don't have to like Star Trek to enjoy Leonard Nimoy's albums. The other one that I have is good as well. It almost makes me want to find more but I won't seek it out unless it's way on the cheap. Like 25 cents cheap. I'll come across it eventually. It's a pretty rough copy but this is an archivist's post not a fucking hipster lounge. Buy your own shit if you don't like it.

SIDE B:

Editor's note: I don't really listen to much music preferring rabid right wing talk radio (think Alex Jones) over the melodic sounds of rapists, drug addicts and sexual deviants. I barely remember listening to this one and probably won't revisit it any time soon. I do recall that the first track was the standout and the rest seemingly the standard fare pseudo opera stuff that sophisticated folks are agog over. Since I have a Jew fetish and even a little of the race in my blood I will give this one a nod in the affirmative.
