IF THIS AIN'T GENIUS...

by Cranberry Lake Jug Band

KICKING MULE RECORDS
KM 339
STEREO
1986

SIDE A:

EINSTEIN THE GENIUS
THE BARNYARD DANCE
DUSKY BELLE
HOP OFF THE TRAIN
IT AIN'T RIGHT

download

SIDE B:

WHAT THE BARKER SAID
WHENDRY WALTZ
ALL NIGHT DINER
GREEN LAKES
HEN PARTY BLUES / SUIT'S CRYBABY BLUES

download

Editor's note: well it ain't genius. It ain't bad either but it definitely isn't genius. And it's not solely because I don't like it but due to the fact that it's middle of the road stuff in a middle of the road genre. I guess you have to like it a lot to vary your opinion. I'm just not down with it, y'all.

SIDE B:

Left Channel Calibration 1000 Hz, 3.54 CM/Sec RMS
Rightt Channel Calibration 1000 Hz, 3.54 CM/Sec RMS

download

Editor's note: side A and B both sound the same to me but maybe it's similar to a dog whistle and some of you mongrels can hear at a different frequency and decipher this into some sort of human language. I don't know what this is and I don't care. I like that unknowing aspect of it best.

No Other Lover by Simplex Minutemen Drum And Bugle Corps
Battle Hymn of the Republic by Simplex Minutemen Drum And Bugle Corps
God Save the Queen by Simplex Minutemen Drum And Bugle Corps

download

Editor's note: the cover art belies the truth about this record. Which is that it's not primarily a marching band record though parts of it fit that bill. The other half is basically crooning duets and is the more enjoyable of the two genres. Considering that the album title sounds like an invading VD army I can live with the provided content.

THE AMAZING GRACE OF GOD

by Jack Brown

MARVEL MUSIC CO.
70130
1966

SIDE A:

Sweet, Sweet Spirit by Cleveland Youth Choir featuring Donna Jones-Akers
Amazing Grace by Sherry Martin
Jack Brown (introduction by Norvell Hayes)

download

SIDE B:

Bless That Wonderful Name by Cleveland Youth Choir featuring Donna Jones
Yes He Did by Holloway Singers
Jack Brown (Continued)
Lord, I'm Coming Home by Cleveland Youth Choir featuring Lana Holloway

download

Editor's note: while I don't mind the music, save for the skips, the testimony of Jack Brown is all that I or likely any curiosity seekers are after. He doesn't disappoint. In fact he needed several records to tell his story. After looking around a little it seems that he put at least one other LP out.

THE GAY RANCHERO

by Tito Guizar

BRONJO RECORDS
BR 122
1957

SIDE A:

Yo No Me Caso Compadre
The Estare Esperando
Tu Y Mis Refranes
Fascinacion
Yo El Aventurero
Llorare Mañana

download

SIDE B:

Agraciada Golondrina
Uy Uy Uy !! Mariposa
La Malagueña
La Higuera
Mi Barro
La Vuelta Al Mundo

download

Editor's note: have you noticed the trend towards the mid-1950s and early 1960s on this blog? Albums from that era had the best designs and graphics to my way of thinking despite often being rather simplistic. It was the era of small labels and generic talent and apparently people were eating it up because thrift stores and estate sales are loaded with hundreds of these tarnished discs and their soiled sleeves. As for Tito Guizar: take a listen and write your own review. He is what you'd expect him to be.

CHRISTMAS SONGS

by Linda Sharon Boston

GARRISON'S RECORDING SERVICE
78 RPM
1953

SIDE A:

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Away in a Manger
Deck the Halls
We Three Kings
Silent Night

download

SIDE B:

Angels From the Realms of Glory
Joy to the World
O Little Town of Bethlehem
Jingle Bells
Merry Christmas Daddy

download

Editor's note: that's right, Christmas in (expletive) January. It's probably the only Xmas record that Ernie (Not Bert) doesn't have and I'm gonna flaunt it. Mmm hmm, mmm hmm. All right, I don't really care about all of that but instead the fact that it's a so-called "home recording". That is, something recorded through a recording service or on a home recorder. This is of a little girl named Linda Sharon Boston from West Virginia who is singing Christmas songs for her daddy. It was recorded at Garrison's Recording Service in Sistersville, West Virginia. Since I know nothing about West Virginia or little Linda I'll let the adorable recording speak for itself.

POPULAR DANCE TUNES

 by Don Baker

HALO RECORDS
50221
MONO
1957

SIDE A:

Cielito Lindo
La Paloma
Serenade Rhumba
Dark Eyes
Musical Moment
Southern Rhythm

download

SIDE B:

Minute Waltz
Melody in F
Humoresque
Barcarolle
Songs My Mother Taught Me
Piano Rag

download

Editor's note: this is novel in the fact that the organ is supplemented by plain piano and by plain I don't mean boring.Neither is the cover. While I am a typical male sexist, racist, Satanic, hegemonic and patriarchical pig of the lowest order I don't have any want to exploit women. Regardless, the cover is hawt. Especially so since it looks as if she is wearing granny panties. The bangs: not so much.

TEMPO ESPANOL!

with Carmen Dragon conducting the Capitol Symphony Orchestra

PICKWICK RECORDS
SPC-3096
STEREO

SIDE A:

Lady of Spain
Jalousie
Valencia
Castillane (From Le Cid)

download

SIDE B:

La Cumparsita
Jesusita En Chichuahua
Ay, Ay, Ay
Spanish Dance No. 1
Intermezzo (from Carmen Suite)

download

Editor's note: with a title like TEMPO ESPANOL! and the oversight of actually reading the album note before buying this I got suckered into the notion that this would be a cha cha cha record. Instead, it's Spanish classical music or at least classical music in the Spanish style. Which is fine in itself but not exactly what I was hoping. Such is the excitement of finding striking album covers and ignoring the fine detail. Oh, well. When I finally start a record trading site this will be filler in a package deal.

LET'S TALK ABOUT LOVE

by Bob Stewart and the Mat Mathews Quintet

DAWN RECORDS
DSP 2002
MONO
1956

SIDE A:

CARAVAN
SKYLARK
LOOK DOWN THAT LONESOME ROAD
IF I'M LUCKY
BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA
COME RAIN OR COME SHINE

download

SIDE B:

WHEN THE BLUES COME ON
AVALON
LAURA
MOONGLOW
IT'S MINE AFTER ALL
BLUE PRELUDE

download

Editor's note: the first track is the main attraction on this one with Caravan being a bit edgy compared to the standard fare crooners. I actually expected it to be terrible but it's all right for what it is. Which is Harry Connick, Jr. in slow-mo or Sinatra on the down-low. More accurately it would be titled Let's Whisper About Love.

THE FABULOUS BOOKER PITTMAN

MUSIDISC RECORDS
M-6006
MONO
1960

SIDE A:

PETITE FLEUR
STEREO BLUES
WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN
HONEYSUCKLE ROSE

download

SIDE B:

WHAT IS THIS THING CALLED LOVE?
LONESOME ROAD
AIN'T MISBEHAVIN'
NOBODY KNOWS THE TROUBLE I'VE SEEN

download

Editor's note: I don't like or follow jazz but the cover won me over. Pittman, grandson of Booker T. Washington, played with many of the giants of jazz during his career and his playing evidences that accomplished cache of bandmates. It still does nothing for me. Musically, it sounds tight but the mood makes me think of drugged up former marching band members slumming it with hookers and seedy bar owners. These accomplished sorts would become the heroes for the ilk of child-raping leftists like Ginsberg and brain-zombie Timothy Leary who were attempting to change the world consciousness to a perfect state of natural peace where anything goes because it assuages the moral relativist. A notion which Charles Mingus put into perspective by stating that, “You can't improvise on nothing; you've got to improvise on something”. Something that both Bookers knew and even a schlub-fucker like me knows. The difference is a matter of intellectual dishonesty and not so much about "cosmic truth". Maybe I don't really have anything against jazz at all but rather the aftermath of the age. I mean, we have come full circum and the ideas of the supposed counter-culture have become institutionalized and a milquetoast RINO such as Paul Ryan has become the counter-culture and a lifelong liberal in GOD EMPEROR TRUMP is the Anti-Christ. Haha. Which only proves that reality is a better mind-opener than ayahuasca or LSD.

REMINISCING AT THE PIPE ORGAN

by Lorin Whitney

SACRED PRODUCTIONS
LPS 6017
STEREO
1958

SIDE A:

ALL THE WAY MY SAVIOUR LEADS
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
SOMEDAY HE'LL MAKE IT PLAIN
ETERNAL FATHER STRONG TO SAVE
SAVIOUR THY DYING LOVE
DAY IS DYING IN THE WEST

download

SIDE B:

BLESSED QUIETNESS
IN THE SWEET BY AND BY
'TIS SO SWEET TO TRUST IN JESUS
WE'VE A STORY TO TELL
FROM GREENLAND'S ICY MOUNTAINS
WHEN THEY RING THOSE GOLDEN BELLS

download

Editor's note: Had Lorin Whitney never recorded his Pipe Organ With Bird Calls (I really need to re-record that lost mp3) records this LP likely wouldn't be on here despite my love of the organ. Despite the cover being so-so the music is divinely Lorin Whitney. Solemn, sacred and melodic as a guy whistling fake bird calls. This is my bird call out to you.

OF MAIDS AND MISTRESSES

by Tom Kines

ELEKTRA RECORDS
EKL-137
1957

SIDE A:

Peg O'Ramsay
Cordyn and Phyllis
Elsie Marley
The Cumberland Lass
The Merchant and the Fiddler's Wife
A Maid Goin' to Comber
The Brisk Young Widow
The Palatine's Daughter

download

SIDE B:

There Was an Oul' Woman in Our Town
Banks of the Virgie
Star of the County Down
Ye Maidens of Ontario
Searching For Lambs
The Shepherd's Daughter
Jezebel Carol
Kitty of Coleraine

download

Editor's note: a rough ride throughout on this one but if you want folk songs about maids and mistresses then this is the disc you've been looking for. Stripped down and threadbare just as you like your MAIDS AND MISTRESSES.

PILSNER PRETZELS POLKAS

by Vardi & The Medallion Strings & Percussion

KAPP RECORDS
ML 7521
MONO
1961

SIDE A:

TINKER POLKA
a. MAXIM'S
b. PLAYROOM POLKA
BEER BARREL POLKA
BARBARA POLKA
HOP SCOTCH POLKA
PIZICATO POLKA
HELENA POLKA
a. LITTLE BROWN JUG
b. CLARINET POLKA

download

SIDE B:

OFFENBACH POLKA
JOLLY COPPERSMITH
TRITSCH-TRATSCH POLKA
PENNSYLVANIA POLKA
BUFFALO GAL
MUSIC! MUSIC! MUSIC!
PAPA: WON'T YOU DANCE WITH ME?

download

Editor's note: I had always been under the impression that polka originated with my brethren the Polish but according to this record it started in Bohemia and spread across Europe like a plague. Apparently, this is the way polka started as an almost classical music lite and then was ravished into a sort of Mexican beer dance by non-Bohemians. Or something like that. It's an okay album but without the excellent cover and name it would still reside at the thrift store.

MAURICE ROCCO AND HIS ROCKING RHYTHM

with Al Duffy

SUTTON RECORDS
SSU 290
STEREO

SIDE A:

MY TZATZKELA
ROSE ROOM
AT SUNDOWN
THE SECRET
POET AND PEASANT

download

SIDE B:

SALUT A PESTH
DANZA DELLA ORE
ANITRA'S DANCE
RAYMOND OVERTURE
WALTZING DOLL

download

Editor's note: I bought this for the cover art, ended up liking the first track and then the audio quality takes a shit. Being that it's a compilation and some of the tracks are older and likely from lesser labels (I'm not going to pretend to know) the sound suffers. At some point on the first side a hiss enters and does not leave for the rest of the record. Sucks donut!?!? But this is a mere listening station and if you like it in crap form then you'll love it in hi-fi, if you can find it. I'm sure you can.

POPULAR MELODIES OF CHOPIN

by Elly Ellason and Orchestra

HUDSON RECORDS
235
MONO
1956

SIDE A:

NOCTURNE, Op. 9
POLONAISE, Op. 53
FUNEBRE MARCH, Op. 35
NOCTURNE

download

SIDE B:

MINUTE WALTZ
POLONAISE
ETUDE, Op. 10, No. 3
POLONIASE, Op. 40

download

Editor's note: I bought this record merely because of the cover and the fact that I had seen the lady on the record cover earlier in the day on another sleeve by The Three Suns. While I like Chopin the main selection that I wanted to hear "Funeral March" starts clacking like a clock as soon as the somber part of the march begins. Which makes sense since the previous owner probably liked it as well.

COCKTAILS ANYONE?

by the Bob Creash Quintet

UNIQUE RECORDS
LP-104
MONO
1958

SIDE A:

IDAHO
SMILES
JEEPERS CREEPERS
IF YOU KNEW SUSIE
THE SHEIK OF ARABY
SHOULD I

download

SIDE B:

AIN'T SHE SWEET
YES SIR, THAT'S MY BABY
DO YOU EVER THINK OF ME
BYE BYE BLACKBIRD
I WANT A GIRL
SHINE

download

Editor's note: I saw this record at the local Goodwill about a month or so ago but left it because it looked too roughed up. Upon re-inspection a few days ago I determined that the cover alone was worth the risk. So here we are with a great sounding disc, a quite excellent cover and a companion label mate for Michael Strange's Something Strange, a favorite of mine. It makes me want to seek out more from the label

VOICE OF THE SEA

ROAD RECORDINGS
5011
MONO

SIDE A:

SHIPS: HARBOR and at SEA
Queen Mary Whistle
Tug Boats
Ferry Boats
Fishing Boats
Fog Horn
USS COLUMBUS
Departure--Putting out to sea
Whistle
Wheel House
Engine Room--Blowers
Ships Bell
Dropping Anchor
Boatswain's Whistle
General Alarm

download

SIDE B:

SURF TEXTURES:
Foamy (sand beach)
Pebbly beach
Rocky cliffs
Pounding storm
Quiet lapping ...with gulls and bell buoy

download

Editor's note: I thought it odd that each side of this record had an end band strip in the middle of the tracks but apparently this can be played on a binaural machine that has two "heads" which combines the ship and ocean sounds. Cool beans. Instead of that fine mixed experiment you have me abruptly lifting the needle arm and skipping to the next playable groove. Pure class. Oh well, there are a few rough spots but if you enjoy oceans and ships then this is your jam.
