SEND ME THE PILLOW YOU DREAM ON

by Hank Locklin

SEARS
SPS-104
STEREO
1964

SIDE A:

To Whom It May Concern
Pinball Millionaire
Who Do You Think You're Foolin'
Our Love Will Show The Way
You Burned A Hole In My Heart
Golden Wrist Watch

download

SIDE B:

I'm Going To Copyright Your Kisses
Paper Face
Send Me The Pillow You Dream On
Come Share The Sunshine With Me
Let Me Be The One
Born To Ramble

download

Editor's note: I'm not a country music fan but if I had to choose between eras it would always be pre-1980s and more specifically before 1970. It was a distinctive backwoods honky tonk sound that rendered an even more mundane sentiment. Not amateurish but simplistic in an accomplished sense and purposely done. Well...then there was Patsy Cline who blew the whole concept to bits. But this is about old Hank and from the sound of this record he could fend for himself as far as hee and hawing go. Slapping a cartoon boot and the SEARS stamp on the cover only enhances his credibility in the musical dustbin.

FROM YAZOO CITY MISSISSIPPI TALKIN

by Jerry Clower

DECCA RECORDS
DL 75286
STEREO
1971

SIDE A:

A Coon Huntin' Story (With Introduction by "Big Ed" Wilkes)
Bully Has Done Flung A Cravin On Me
Baby Goes To College
Homecomin Steaks!

download

SIDE B:

The Graduate Returns
Marcell's Talkin' Chain Saw
The Chauffeur And The Professor
Good Citizenship

download

Editor's note: I'm going to put this country simple: this is not a good record. It's not funny. It's not even remotely interesting save for the quite excellent front cover. Of course, I also think that Alex Jones is completely hilarious so that's my point of references as far as comedy. Sam Kinison was funny to me as well. Hell, Don Lonie even struck me as humorous but this dude leaves me cold.

SINNER MAN

by The Southern Gospel Singers

JEWEL RECORDS
LPS 508
STEREO
1975

SIDE A:

One Day I Will
On The Way Up
Touring That City
First Look
Why Me Lord

download

SIDE B:

Jesus Will Love Me The Same
More Than A Swear Word
What A Morning
Sinner Man
Pity The Man

download

Editor's note: if you were looking for that hometown sort of out-of-tune whirligig of religious fervor spun at a low-speed yearning yarn then you've arrived at glory right here, boy. They don't sing badly...together...but when the soloists step forward the amateur singer in them does as well. Now if I was Simon Cowell I'd dismiss this act without pause but fortunately I'm his antipode and gladly welcome this classic to the roster.

MY GOLDEN FAVORITES

by Teresa Brewer

CORAL RECORDS
CRL 57351
MONO
1960

SIDE A:

Ricochet (Rick-O-Shay)
Let Me Go, Lover
You Send Me
Empty Arms
The One Rose (That's Left In My Heart)

download

SIDE B:

Till I Waltz Again With You
(Put Another Nickel In) Music! Music! Music!
A Tear Fell
Mutual Admiration Society
Peace Of Mind
A Sweet Old Fashioned Girl

download

Editor's note: when I purchased this record in Knoxville I just assumed from that cover art that Teresa Brewer was some 3rd rate lounge singer. She is/was anything but that. She had numerous top 10 and 20 hits and a couple of number ones. Both which appear on the first two tracks of side b. Ginchy, eh?

REAL 'N FUNKY

by Michael Henry Martin

SSS INTERNATIONAL RECORDS
SSS-26
STEREO
1976

SIDE A:

No One Will Ever Know (2:51)
The Man In Me (2:51)
Virginia Born (2:52)
Before The Next Teardrop Falls (2:23)
Revenge (2:48)
Warm Your Heart (2:37)

download

SIDE B:

New Morning (3:12)
What Now My Love (3:00)
Georgia Morning Dew (3:37)
Tender Leaves Of Love (2:34)
He'll Have To Go (3:05)

download

Editor's note: I'm not sure why but when looking at the front cover art and considering the title slapped under Mr. Martin's photo I expected something squirrelly and lite. Not so! This dude was a deep-voiced brohammer. Probably a little too much in some spots but he was what he was. The record shook under the needle and I had to lower the recording volume numerous times to get this thing from distorting into the flatulence zone. All in all a solid and professional effort from a guy who had other things going on besides music.

THE TWIST

by The Candymen

DIPLOMAT RECORDS
2262-A
MONO
1962

SIDE A:

Twistin
Doin' The Twist
Stand Around, Move Around
Goin' Steady
Come Twist With Me
Space Twist

download

SIDE B:

Spearmint Twist
New York City Twist
Candybar
I Really Love The Twist
Twistin' Out Of Space
Honey Twist

download

Editor's note: I always look up records when I am purchasing them at thrift stores just to see how many people own each disc on Discogs. The ones with no listing are no-brainer fodder for the blog. This one is pretty common and not worth more than a few bucks but the cover is just too good to pass up.

This record made a strange skipping during the drum parts the first two times that I attempted to record it but the third time was the charm. The band is solid as are the tracks. Which should be expected since the group apparently consisted of Roy Orbison's backing group. Or so I read somewhere. Just don't expect any singing because there ain't squat in that department.

THE ZODIAC SUITE

by Norrie Paramor & His Orchestra

CAPITOL RECORDS
T-10073
MONO
1959

SIDE A:

An Aries Aria
Taurus Tango
The Gemini Waltz
Cancerian Concerto
Lonely Leo
The Impatient Virgo

download

SIDE B:

A Libra Rhapsody
Seductive Scorpio
The Sagacious Sagittarius
Capricious Capricorn
Mood Aquarius
Ode To Pisces

download

Editor's note: sometimes the world sneaks up on you and drops a diamond on your aural senses such as this record. Mind you, it turned out to be Cubic zirconium as there's water and mold damage to the bottom of the sleeve but at least the main portion of the cover is in a presentable state. Plus the moldy residue wiped off the disc without too much damage. The music's also a bit too tepid for my astrological tastes but there are segments of ethereal singing and dark matter melodies that compensate for its shortcomings.

BALLADES AND IMPROMPTUS

by Chopin; played by Orazio Frugoni

VOX PRODUCTIONS
PL 10 490
MONO
1957

SIDE A:

Ballade #1, G Minor, Op. 23
Ballade #2, F Major, Op. 38
Ballade #3, A Flat Major, Op. 47
Ballade #4, F Minor, Op. 52

download

SIDE B:

Impromptu #1, A Flat Major, Op. 29
Impromptu #2, F Sharp Major, Op. 36
Impromptu #3, G Flat Major, Op. 51
Impromptu #4, C Sharp Minor, Op. 66

download

Editor's note: sometimes it's about the music or the lack thereof. Other times it's the kitsch factor. This time it's all about the cover. Although from the quality of my photo you'd think it's all about the tracks. Sorry about that but I'm way too busy to worry about the art quality any more. This one looked aesthetically pleasing and the music within matches that sentiment.

a) Dancing On The Ceiling
b) Dancing In The Dark

Romantic Mood

b) The Very Thought Of You
c) You And The Night And The Music
Rhythmic Mood
a) Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart
b) Fascinating Rhythm

download

Editor's note: Don Baker returns! And this time he's not peddling a smutty cover. Plus, he's sporting quite a cache of organ keys on the cover.

While my unsophisticated ear can't decipher Don Baker from George Wright in technique or tone I do enjoy the general sound of each and their contemporaries and betters.

CINDY SINGS BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER

by Cindy Tilley

MISSION RECORDS
MR-ST-613
STEREO

SIDE A:

Bridge Over Troubled Water
Amazing Grace
Why Me
Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory
Fill My Cup

download

SIDE B:

I Believe In Miracles
Ten Thousand Years
How Great Thou Art
He
Lord's Prayer

download

Editor's note: I was very excited when I found this in a Knoxville thrift store. Cindy is attractive, wholesome and smalltow kitsch. Which is perfect for the blog. I was so happy to find her on FB and had planned to contact her and ask what memories she had of the recording. Then I listened to it. It's not that she has a  poor voice it's just not in tune. Kind of like one of us singing in the shower. I'm guessing that she doesn't want to hear it but I could be wrong.

Sneak Previews #2

SOFT AND SWEET

by The Three Suns

RCA VICTOR RECORDS
LPM 1041
MONO
1955

SIDE A:

There Is No Greater Love
A Sinner Kissed An Angel
Moonlight In Vermont
Flamingo
The River Seine
Velvet Moon

download

SIDE B:

Stars Fell On Alabama
The Touch Of Your Lips
Autumn Nocturne
Blue Orchids
Skylark
It's Dawn Again

download

Editor's note: sweet and low and soft and slow to the umpteenth degree. I'm not saying it's bad or good but it is what it purports to be. Personally, I'd take a pass on it but I'd also likely take one on you as well. See, you were made for another. Grab it and be gone ye skallywags!

PERCUSSION ITALIANO

featuring Charles Magnante

GRAND AWARD RECORDS
GA 257 SD
STEREO
1961

SIDE A:

Arrivederci, Roma
Ciao, Ciao, Bambina
Ti-Pi-Tin
Mamma
Serenade In The Night
Sicilian Tarantella

download

SIDE B:

Domani
Marina
Come Prima
Speranze Perdute (Lost Hopes)
Legend of Lovers
Just Say I Love Her

download

Editor's note: I expected this to be horrible but it's not bad at all. Not great but not bad either. It tries to play into the stereotypical Italian sound to match the title and that somewhat mars otherwise great musicianship. All the same the sound is good and the sides brief enough to not strangle the concept.

EVERYMAN

starring Burgess Meredith

CAEDMON RECORDS
TC-1031
STEREO
1958

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's note: despite liking Burgess Meredith as an actor and recognizing other voices on this record the story is insufferably boring and the diction is so outdated that I lost interest rather quickly. I listened most of the way through to the second side but the slow-dragging plot murdered any hope that I had for this to be great literature. A new translation not hampered by rhyming might enliven it a bit but I have my doubts.

SIDE B:

GEMUTLICHKEIT MUSS SEIN

download

Editor's note: if you're sick of German songs then brace yourself because I seemingly keep finding these sorts of releases. Any and all that come with a beer stein will make their way here. The songs themselves flow through me like bad beer that comes out the small tube after poisoning my gut.
