Editor's note: what could be better than pizza, monkeys and a grand organ all in one place? If I have to tell you what then you've already lost out at life. Which is a given since you're reading this nonsense of the lowest order. Anyway, I planned to scan the booklet which accompanies this album but I'm in the throes of laziness on my day off before 6 long days of jerkin' the workin' man's blues and then a one thousand mile back-and-forth directly after that soul-crushing half-fortnight sans two days so I didn't bother with it. Get me? I do not care if you do.

Editor's note: this one speaks for itself and should need no notes unless you are unaware of John or Abigail Adams. In that case leave this blog immediately and...all right, don't do that (for legal reasons) but definitely slap yourself for being a moron. Unless you're a kid and in that case convince your parents to slap themselves in the face for not teaching you anything.

DANCE RANCH

called by Ron Schneider

MERRBACH RECORD SERVICE
LP-2001
STEREO

SIDE A:

UP THE CREEK
SQUARE DANCE MUSIC IN MY SOUL
BLACK MOUNTAIN RAG
TIE A YELLOW RIBBON
SWOGGLE STICK

download

SIDE B:

ALL I EVER NEED IS YOU
PUTTIN' ON THE DOG
TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS
SKILLET LICKIN'
DADDY DON'T YOU WALK SO FAST

download

Editor's note: I knew what I was getting into when I purchased this one at McKay's Books in Knoxville but couldn't resist the kitschy folk art on the cover nor that catchy title. Ron Schneider has a unique way about his calling. Not that I have much experience with square dancing but in my limited experience with the genre his cadence stood out to me. Not enough for me to revisit the album beyond the initial listening but it was noteworthy enough to mention it.

AUDIO DIRECTIONS

by the Grab Bag

DIRECT-DISK
JCM-R001
1976

SIDE A:

PEACE-PIECE
ITUTU
CAN YOU STAND IT

download

SIDE B:

WE CAN FLY
--AND I LEARNED IT FROM A PRINCESS
EMERGENCE

download

Editor's note: seeing the cover for this record in the discount bin at McKay's books in Knoxville gave me great hope for an amazing find. But after reading the cover a little I realized that the only space-age industrial or avant garde sound coming from it would be visual. It's not a bad record if you like jazz. The only thing I dislike more than jazz is jazz hands. Yes, yes...I'm a very poor party guest and guest in general.

THE WALSH MEMORIAL BELL CHOIR RINGS FOR JOY!

by The Walsh Memorial Bell Choir

DHARMA PRODUCTIONS
GFL 1097
STEREO

SIDE A:

FANFARE FOR BELLS
FULFILLMENT AND BIRTH
AMERICA
CELEBRATION

NETTLETON

RING FOR PEACE

download

SIDE B:

INTRODUCTION AND ALLEGRO
PRAISE THE GOD OF HEAVEN ABOVE
O TANNEBAUM
DECK THE HALLS
SLEIGH RIDE
'TWAS THE MOON OF WINTERTIME and WHENCE COMES THIS RUSH OF WINGS AFAR?
MAPLE LEAF RAG
PARADE OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS

download

Editor's note: this is another Knoxville find from McKay's Books, which has turned into my go-to source lately since I have so little free time to myself while back in Michigan. When I do I'm often scouring thrift stores for books and doing research on one of my 8 million blogs that nobody reads. So be it. While I like the cover of this record the product is a little underwhelming. Not bad but too much of the same sort of thing repeated. You might disagree. Just as I do with the back cover photo which I shall remedy in a day or two in much better lighting.

As to how this record made its way into the South: included in the sleeve is a program from a 1981 Kentucky & Tennessee week or so tour that had several concerts in Knoxville. Obviously, somebody purchased it from one of those venues and then it was passed onto McKay's through some sort of donation. Not that you were asking about its pedigree and ownership.

CRIPPLE'S REWARD

by Buddy Robertson w/ The Gospel Echoes

K-TOWN RECORDS
KT-501

SIDE A:

Cripple's Reward (2:37)
Light Guiding Me (2:36)
Heaven in a Vision (2:18)
Looking Through the Windows of Heaven (3:13)
Sign By The Side of the Road (1:42)
Till I Thank Him For What He Has Done (2:15)

download

SIDE B:

Will the Angels Let Me Play (3:02)
Rough Side of the Mountain (3:08)
Thankful (2:12)
Nearer My God To Thee (2:28)
Wreath of Flowers (3:15)
I Know What Your [sic] Talking About (2:59)

download

Editor's note: I bought this for the novelty of a polio victim's testimony but was won over by the melancholy refrains of fatalism wrought by Mr. Robertson. He sings both mournfully and lovingly towards death for both salvation and release from his broken body. He wasn't the best singer but he was five times as earnest as Bob Dylan or The Beatles. His sometimes background singers, The Gospel Echoes, have rather lovely voices as well. An A+ DIY effort.

He died in 1985 and is buried at Providence Cemetery in Sevierville, Tennessee. Which is a 40 minute drive from Knoxville, my second hometown via my Clone child. Next time I'm down there I'll convince her to take a trip with her crazy father in exchange for other vessel of poop slime (yes, it's an actual best-selling product that comes with a cute poop animal toy).

CHOKE UP ON THE 8 BALL B/W WON'T YOU STOP

by Doug Roberts

SAVAGE RECORDS
SR005
45 RPM
1979

SIDE A:

CHOKE UP ON THE 8 BALL

download

SIDE B:

WON'T YOU STOP

download

Editor's note: as I approach 1,000 posted records I find myself selecting them randomly by whim and opportunity just as I started 10 years ago. Had I not taken off 5+ years I'd be at twice as many recordings but still having barely touched the medium's unique and weird examples. On this 45 we get some standard fare country obscurities. The sound is familiar but the name is the unknown part. At least to me and the internet. A few scant mentions on discogs.com and nothing else. Just as I prefer them. To my unbiased and unsympathetic ear this sounds as good or bad as most one-off country hits. So why didn't Doug Roberts make it and others did? No clue. I bought his record just the same. He made it here if that counts for anything.

MICROCOSMIC WONDERLAND

by Jim Rao and his Orange Cake Orchestra

AIP008
10"
1998

SIDE A:

Pacific Ocean Park
King Of Inertia
I Just Can't Be Without You Again

download

SIDE B:

I Heard You Whisper
Some Sweetness
Wind Painting

download

Editor's note: I was under no impression that this was going to be anything but what it is. That being a typical synth-pop electronica band that you'd hear coming from any college station at 2 o'clock in the morning. It's neither great nor bad but is something you hear and then pass it along to the universe to recycle. Here you go, Uni.

I WENT TO THE ANIMAL FAIR

with the Golden Singers and Orchestra

GOLDEN RECORDS
LP-195

SIDE A:

I WENT TO THE ANIMAL FAIR
THE SOW TOOK THE MEASLES
BINGO
THE LITTLE WHITE DUCK
SAGGY BAGGY ELEPHANT

download

SIDE B:

TAWNY SCRAWNY LION
THREE BLIND MICE
THREE LITTLE KITTENS
PETER AND THE WOLF
WILLIE THE WHISTLING GIRAFFE
FUZZY WUZZY WAS A BEAR
TURKEY IN THE STRAW
KANGAROO HOP

download

Editor's note: this is not one of the better children's albums that I've come across but the readers of this blog aren't exactly the creme de la creme themselves. So you get what you get. I bought this one for the first song which seems derived from and was sung by the same duo that sang a different version on a similar compilation that featured a smoking duck on the back cover. Unfortunately, I sold that copy. This is hardly it's replacement.

HORROR SOUNDS OF TERROR

by unknown

HRB MUSIC, INC.
HRB 5000HS
1979

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's note: I've had this record for a while now but had forgotten about it until the other day. Actually, I remembered it but had forgotten about the reverse cover and this second record. Since all of the first album tracks are likely copyrighted to the max I didn't even bother to record it. The sounds on this one are your run-of-the-mill Halloween horror collection variations on the same theme. Not that I don't like it because I enjoy all recordings in this mundane ilk.

GUITARS A GO GO VOL. 2

by Jerry Cole & The Stingers

CROWN RECORDS
CST 553
STEREO
1966

SIDE A:

Yeah,Yeah,Yeah
Hold On
No More Hanky Panky
Hey Little Girl
Groovy Night

SIDE B:

Along Came Mary
Milk And Honey
Sunset Strip
Barefoot Baby
Paperback Lover

Editor's note: this is about what you'd expect from a mid-1960s guitar album by a guy with a staid name and a backing band called The Stingers. Dirty guitar with a pop-rock ensemble that delves into various genres for their flavoring. I like it.

IF GOD IS DEAD WHO'S THIS LIVING IN MY SOUL?

by The Christian Family Singers

ROSE RECORDS
LPR 801
STEREO

SIDE A:

IF GOD IS DEAD (Who's This Living In My Soul) 3:03
I'M HEADING HOME 2:15
WHAT HEAVEN MEANS TO ME 3:11
HEAVEN WILL NEVER WELCOME A SWEETER MAMA 3:39
UNFORTUNATE STRANGER 2:32
BROKEN PIECES 2:37

download

SIDE B:

WHAT A TIME IN HEAVEN 1:41
IF THAT ISN'T LOVE 3:06
ALL I HAD TO OFFER HIM WAS ME 2:53
TOO MUCH TO GAIN TO LOSE 2:30
IT'S ME AGAIN LORD 2:49
THE ROAD THAT LEADS TO HEAVEN 1:51

download

Editor's note: although the singing is off-pitch at times I expected way worse. With a little auto-tune or a vocal coach Marie Lawless wouldn't have been a bad singer. As such, it's about what you expect of a family Christian band from Ohio via West Virginia. Gospel twang with a little rockabilly guitar. Crashing drums would have spiced it up but you get what you get from Goodwill.

SLIGHTLY SOBER

by The Hangovers of the Cornell University Glee Club

CORNELL UNIVERSITY RECORDS
33 1/3
1979

SIDE A:

Alexander's Ragtime Band
Blue Skies
Danny Boy
Lida Rose
Princess Papuli's Papayas
I Remember You
Honey, Honey
Perfidia
Ah Woe, Ah Me

download

SIDE B:

Back in Dad and Mother's Day
Once Upon A Summertime
Marry A Woman Uglier Than You
Coney Island Baby
Baby, What You Want Me To Do (You Got Me Running) Bright Lights, Big City
Get A Food Start
Surger Girl
Softly As I Leave You

download

Editor's note: it's hard to believe that in this acid-washed day and age that glee clubs still exist among college students but they do. Which makes this record from 1979 not as defunct as I thought. Though it is seemingly quite scarce. I bought it because I figured that the cover would befit the music but wrong was I. There is no street cred in this club o' glee. They are full-blown and unabashedly barbershop quartet-esque. So mote it be.

STEAM RAILROADING UNDER THUNDERING SKIES

featuring the Bonhomie and Hattiesburg Southern Railway

MOBILE FIDELITY RECORDS
MF-8
1961

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's note: honestly, they could have just turned this into two separate records because the combination of railroads and a thundershower just don't do much to titillate. At least not in this instance. Rarely do the two sounds meet at their apex and when they do it isn't all that exciting.

YOGA FOR HEALTH AND BEAUTY

by Eugene S. Rawls, instructed by Eve Diskin

OPUS RECORDS
1202-1203
1967?

SIDE A:

Introduction
COBRA
ALTERNATE LEG PULL
HALF LOTUS

download

SIDE B:

LION
HALF LOCUST
FISH
SHOULDER STAND

download

Editor's note: I would gladly do yoga if I wasn't so lazy and had any kind of patience. Instead, I prefer the alternate drudgery of walking miles and reading the idiot phone at my own peril. But I do like these kind of records. Mainly because they are non-music and also due to the fact that they aren't all that difficult to find at a junk or thrift shop. Though I will admit to having passed up quite a few in the past year or so before recently picking up two albums of this ilk on separate occasions. Who knows when I'll get to the other.

Apparently, Rawls and Diskin collaborated on a book by the same name in 1967 so I'd assume that it had success and this album followed shortly after or in that time frame at least.

THE SOUND OF GYPSY MUSIC

by Dick Kesner, his Magic Stradivarius and Orchestra

CORAL RECORDS
CRL 757376
STEREO
1961

SIDE A:

Hungarian Rhapsody #2
Two Guitars
When A Gypsy Makes His Violin Cry
The Gypsy With Fire In His Shoes
Golden Earrings
Hungarian Dance #5

download

SIDE B:

Gypsy
Play Fiddle Play
Dolores
Softly As In A Morning Sunrise
Zigeuner
Gypsy Love Song

download

Editor's note: usually with Gypsy music you get an ethnic flare, and that's true to an extent on this one, but what really sticks out on this one is the deep classical sound of the violin which carries the sound. Not that I know much of anything about either genre but that's what stuck out to me while listening to it in the middle of the night when most vampires are feasting. Though, while re-listening to it this morning minus the comfort and distraction of a portable heater buzzing its static dictates I can hear percussion, organ and other instruments beyond the din.I also like the Oldendorf's sticker on the back from a musical or department store in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
