MUSICAL REFLECTIONS

by Rome Boy's Choir

BOYS' CLUB CHOIR
STEREO
1972

SIDE A:

WONDERFUL DAY LIKE TODAY
SHALOM
THE SWEETHEART TREE
FEELING GOOD
BORN FREE
BYE BYE BLUES
HAPPY WANDERER

download

SIDE B:

CONSIDER YOURSELF
KYRIE ELEISON
DONA NOBIS PACEM
FRERE JACQUES
PEOPLE
FIFTY NIFTY UNITED STATES
LET THERE BE MUSIC
RED, WHITE & BLUE MAGIC

download

Editor's note: another failed cover photo by yours unruly [sic] but I may get around to re-shooting it. Either way, I like the cover. The music is okay as well but I have always much preferred female choir over males even though boy's voices are generally passable for female at a young age. Honestly, I don't really care either way.

DIXON DUETS

by George and Charlene Dixon

WEST FAMILY RECORDS
CSW 4671
MONO

SIDE A:

I'LL NEVER BE LONESOME AGAIN
WHAT A FRIEND
THE TOUCH OF THE MASTER'S HAND
NEAR THE CROSS
YOU'LL KNOW WHEN JESUS SAVES YOU

download

SIDE B:

HE CAME TO MY RESCUE
ZION'S HILL
JESUS SIGNED MY PARDON
THE LAST MILE OF THE WAY
NATURALIZED FOR HEAVEN

download

Editor's note: as you'll hear, George is the more accomplished singer of the duet. Or maybe Charlene is just trying not to show him up. Either way they love Jesus. You might, too. I love the simplicity of the cover if nothing else.

AESOP'S FABLES

narrated, sung and composed by Marshall Izen

COLUMBIA RECORDS
CR 21538
STEREO
1972

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's note: while you're listening to this I'll be in the process of driving back to Detroit from Knoxville with my Clone. Thanks to technology and a little pre-planning I can do such things without having to pull over or crash the car. Of course, back in the heyday of this blog (although I think my finds these days are much better) I used to pre-plan and post as such weeks in advance. Now I'm prattling.

As for Aesop and his tales, this is not my first or last foray into the genre. A more mechanical and less jovial rendering was posted here in 2010.

MUSIC FROM HAIR

 by The Sunshine Generation

PICKWICK RECORDS
SPC-36558
STEREO
1979

SIDE A:

AQUARIUS
I GOT LIFE
FRANK MILLS
HAIR
BE-IN (HARE KRISHNA)

download

SIDE B:

WHERE DO I GO?
EASY TO BE HARD
GOOD MORNING STARSHINE
THE FLESH FAILURES

download

Editor's note: I went on a recording spree during my two days off for Christmas and its Eve and this is one of the dozen LPs that made the cut. Not because of the content but mostly due to the excellent cover which is not reflected in my shoddy camera work. That'll need a do-over. The music is forever pressed into the wax and there will be no altering its dirty hippy content. I found it a bit simplistic with a dirty Marxist sitting in the grass and rotting with the scents of sandalwood and body odor but catchy in a few places as well. Overall, I'd just as well throw it into a volcano but that same sentiment could be reserved for a few trillion people past and present, too.

THE ORIGINAL BLUEGRASS OPERA OF DETROIT

by Bud McKirgan

NO LABEL
7075N15
STEREO
1977

SIDE A:

You Old Oak Tree
Leaving My Mark
Goin' Home To Detroit
Frame By Jerry McGee
Stuck In Detroit
My Children Can't Stand Bluegrass

download

SIDE B:

Jesus Is Working In Detroit
Blood On The Coal
You Put The U In UAW
Where?
Trucks In Kentucky
You Old Oak Tree (Reprise)

download

Editor's note: I found this record in a run-down house on the outskirts of Canton, Michigan and save for the fact that the title included Detroit and bluegrass and looked like a limited local press I wouldn't have bought it. It's not a bad record if you like bluegrass and even if you don't as is the case with me.

TALL TOM JEFFERSON

narrated by Richard Kiley with the Golden Orchestra

WONDERLAND RECORDS
LP-270
STEREO
1974

SIDE A:

Tall Tom Jefferson
View From The Top Of The Mountain
Great Big Beautiful World
Jefferson
A Cabinet Debate

download

SIDE B:

Votes
Tall Tom Jefferson (Reprise)
Mister Jefferson's Whirligig
Louisiana
Let Me Be Remembered

download

Editor's note: there are those unenlightened, intellectually-vacuous entities who virtue signal and call the Founding Fathers a gaggle of racist, slave-master bastards so that they can dilute the Constitution into a half-baked recipe for Socialism but that group of great men have proven themselves over the two centuries since to be beacons in the long, dark history of mankind. At present 75% of their ideas have been watered down into battering rams of inequity by the Marxist intelligentsia and their apologists, though the original spirit still remains intact. But I digress...and also need to go to the thrift store so I will cut my rant short.

YOU ARE THERE!

by Christ's Mission

EVA TONE RECORDS
EV-456843
STEREO
33 1/3
1968

SIDE A:

download

Editor's note: I don't know how many of these were made and still survive but luckily this one was left in pretty good condition when I found it at an estate sale last week. It was a Lutheran Church giveaway from the Missouri Synod for Armed Forces Day in 1968. The mix is pretty good, the message is clear though at some points the audio sounds secondhand as if it was delivered over a phone line. Which it probably was. I mean it's a fricking giveaway flexi disc so you know right off the bat that it's not going to be hi-fi. A scarcity nonetheless.

download

Editor's note: it's not often that you find a funerary-related album let alone an actual memorial service put to wax in a dollar bin. But such has been my luck lately to keep finding these aural treasures. Now to find this record by Dr. Dallas F. Billington.

CHRISTMAS IN THE CARIBBEAN

by various speakers/artists

EVA TONE RECORDS
EV 101872-IAT
1972

SIDE A:

Excerpts from the 1972 Lutheran Hour Special, "Christmas in the Caribbean."

download

SIDE B:

Sir Clifford Campbell, the Governor-General of Jamaica talks with Dr. Oswald Hoffmann, Lutheran Hour Speaker

download

Editor's note: this is great. I found it at an estate sale this week among other flexis that looked as if the dog had used them as a scratching mat. So I only bought a few. It explains that Jesus is the reason for the season although I'm not sure that's how the holiday started. Christmas itself, in its current state, however, did. I think. I don't even care if it did because these dudes discuss the meaning of Christmas and then play some of the island music that nobody likes but are too polite to say so.

A NIGHT IN GATLINBURG, TENNESSEE WITH THE SMOKY MOUNTAIN TRAVELERS

by the Smoky Mountain Travelers

TEE CEE RECORDS
TC-ACA 32172
STEREO

SIDE A:

MEMORIES
MILWAUKEE
I CRIED AGAIN
DOC HARRIS
LIGHT AT THE RIVER
YOU DON'T KNOW MY MIND

download

SIDE B:

LOVE COME HOME
FAIR AND TENDER LADIES
COLUMBUS STOCKADE
SINKING CREEK
SUMMER TIME IS GONE
FADED LOVE

download

Editor's note: another mom and pop outfit on a gravel wheel. The rough ride being in the playback and even the original recording. Which is quite low coupled with the sounds of the rough play equaling it. Though, I'm not complaining because I knew what I was buying and also this isn't a recording studio but a sampler. If you want the thing in Hi-Fi fifty channel stereo megawatt hooker sound heaven then buy it yourself. That's how I roll.

SNOWFLAKE

muisc by S. Huminlowych, vocals by A. Derbish and Trio Troyanda

AQUARIUS RECORDS
MS-10465
STERE)
1974

SIDE A:

SNOWFLAKE
YOU'RE MY EVERY THOUGHT
MY LOVE SONG
GASLIGHT
STAY WITH ME
WITHOUT YOU

download

SIDE B:

THE FOUNTAIN
TWILIGHT
CHESTNUT BLOSSOMS
WORLD OF LOVE
MY LONGING
LIFE WITHOUT SPRING

download

Editor's note: this looked festive and Russian so I bought it for the Snowflake (Snizhynka) effect but it didn't bring in old St. Nick, winter or the yuletide itself whatsoever. It's mood music of some sort. Gypsy perhaps? Jazz redux? I don't know. I just liked the cover. I still do.

A CHILD'S CRY: A CLUE TO DIAGNOSIS

narrated by Dr. Eugene G. Weinberg

PFIZER LABORATORIES DIVISION
A4RM0470
STEREO
1971

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's note: there will be an inestimable amount of crying babies during the yuletide who didn't get what they wanted and I'm not even counting those with Trump Derangement Syndrome. Oh, bwahahaha! All hail the jolly fat man. As for this record...there are some sad sounds on here of sick babies. Some even sound demonic and you could see why some quack might think one would need an exorcism. Personally, I think the entire race of Humansaurus Rex needs one.

CHRISTMAS COUNTRY STYLE

by Slim Boyd and the Range Hands

PREMIER ALBUMS
XMS-11
STEREO
1967

SIDE A:

GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN
ON DECEMBER 5 AND 20
WAGON ON CHRISTMAS
I HEARD THE BELLS ON CHRISTMAS DAY
JEANETTE ISABELL

download

SIDE B:

RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER
THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
A SANTA CLAUS GREETING
HAVE A MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS
SILENT NIGHT

download

Editor's note: I've found so many interesting records lately that I wish I had little elves to record and post hourly. But I don't so they trickle in when I have free time. Which isn't much but it's rest-evoking and this aids in that endeavor.

This is the second record that I've stumbled upon from Premier Albums. It's not at all what I expected from the cover art alone. I expected ripping slide guitars with a country twang but this is more of a gospel and hymns album for the most part.

I also found a newspaper advert for this and other records from 1967, which is what I have placed the date as.

MSC MEN'S GLEE CLUB SINGS

by the Michigan State College Glee Club

RCA VICTOR RECORDS
F8OW-0676
45 RPM
1955

SIDE A:

MSC Shadows
Fight Song

download

SIDE B:

Close Beside the Winding Cedar
Spartan Toast

download

Editor's note: this record is a huge disappointment. No, not because Michigan State is a second-rate rummy college-university or that it's a glee club presentation but rather due to its horrible sound quality. This is one of those "it looks good but sounds like somebody scrubbed it with a Brillo pad a time or three." Hence it's a muddied representation of the original. Oh well, I tried.

On a side note, Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science became Michigan State University of Agriculture and Applied Science in 1955 and there are two versions of this pressing which display fact. The discogs listing for it shows the university label. Apparently mine is the earlier version from that same year before the switch.

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

with the Norman Luboff Choir

ELBA PRODUCTIONS
STEREO
1968

SIDE A:

Savory Serenade
Wintertime
Lullaby Time

download

SIDE B:

The Night Before Christmas
The Morning Of Christmas

download

Editor's note: there's an old saying, "How do you get the lube off Norman? Play his damned records." All right, I totally made that up and what a ghastly thing to write on a post featuring Christmas music. But isn't the tale of St. Nick fraught with monstrous images of wastrel children being beaten with a switch for lying to the shabbily dressed curmudgeon? No matter, we've sanitized all that and why not for there are volumes and stacks of goods to sell. I'm in the spirit. Rejoice, ye cretins!
