by Bill Dana as Jose Jimenez

KAPP RECORDS
KL-1215
MONO?
1960

The Judo Expert
The Piano Tuner
The Television Engineer

download

SIDE B:

The Broadway Writer
The Piano Tuner (Again)
The Artist
The J.J.J. Salesman
Warmup From Spike Jones Show

download

Editor's note: you know what to expect by now. Slapstick. Deadpan. Early 1960s approval. Not a bad shtick if you can get it and a lot of people seemingly got it. What you can expect from Mr. Jimenez in the future on this blog is no appearances for another decade or so.

Preview of Knoxville's Rick Walker's Collection of Most Requested Songs

I usually don't do previews. Mostly because I am too unmotivated but also because it's a waste of time. In this case it's a necessity. The track below, Harlem Nocturne, which I had never heard before but believe that it's an old classic impressed me enough to garner a special post. It's a left turn on this album of crooning and myopic top 40 melodies. Or not. I mostly blanked in and out while recording this but Harlem Nocturne woke me up. Have a listen.

download

It's from a fairly scarce recording but somebody from Missouri has a sealed copy for sale on eBay if you can't live without it.

THE ASTRONAUT

by Bill Dana as Jose Jimenez

KAPP RECORDS
KL-1238
MONO
1961

SIDE A:

My Nightclub Act
Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup
The Astronaut (With Don Hinkley)

download

SIDE B:

Presenting Bill Dana
Any Questions!

download

Editor's note: I'm not sure why I clarified in this post that Bill Dana was playing the part of Jose Jimenez since William Szathmary was playing the part of Bill Dana as well. All personas of the same dude. Today, he would be put in prison for cultural appropriation. But back then he got a television show out of the shtick.

JOSE JIMENEZ TALKS TO TEENAGERS

by Jose Jimenez

KAPP RECORDS
KL 1304
MONO
1962

SIDE A:

The Cheerleader (3:05)
The Vocational Guidance Counselor (3:39)
The Etiquette Expert (10:17)

download

SIDE B:

The History Lesson - Christopher Columbus (3:16)
The Marriage Counselor (2:23)
Another History Lesson - George Washington (2:10)
My Alma Mater (4:10)

download

Editor's note: I've had at least one or two Jose Jimenez records for a decade or so but for some reason have never recorded any of them. A fact that had eluded me until I sorted out my record stash today. I even alphabetized my religious and Christmas albums. That's what happens when I get a weekend off. Anyway, two more Jose Jimenez records will follow this one on subsequent days. They are somewhat clever but hardly laugh-out-loud funny. They are classics just the same.

LEAVES OF GRASS

read by Ed Begley

CAEDMON RECORDS
TC 1037
1959

SIDE A:

I Hear America Singing
The Old Face Of The Mother Of Many Children
To A Locomotive
A March In The Ranks Hard-Prest
The Sleepers Are Very Beautiful
Song Of Myself

download

SIDE B:

When I Heard The Learn'd Astronomer
Out Of The Cradle Endlessly Rocking
Give Me The Splendid Silent Sun
Good-Bye My Fancy!

download

Editor's note: I've always believed that bad poetry sounds even worse when spoken and this is as bad as it gets. Walt frickin' Whitman. Bard of the overwrought. Progenitor to the pedo-con man Ginsberg. Two ruiners of verse. Though, you can give Whitman some credit for opening the genre which produced Robinson Jeffers and the Modernists. The latter whom I also loathed but compared to what came after them, they are the standard bearers of the art. But enough of my prattling. Listen to the king of prattling via the mouthpiece of Ed Begley. Surely, he was a Communist who hated America. Nothing else explains that voiiiiiice.

THE SOUL SINGING RAMBOS

by the Rambos

HEART WARMING RECORDS
HWS-1952
STEREO
1968

SIDE A:

He Looked Beyond My Fault
Troubles Can Break You Or Make You A Man
A Hymn From Way Back
By And By The Night Will Vanish
I Have A Home
I Still Believe

download

SIDE B:

I Just Came To Talk With You Lord
I've Seen All Of This World
Don't Take My Cross Away
A Picture Of Your Mother
God Has No Certain Dwelling Place

download

Editor's note: when three people are holding guitars on a record cover you expect a rollicking ride through the gospel. Not here, friends. In smatterings there is a folksy feel but just as often its orchestration and piano. Which is fine if you're into an eclectic Jesus but I wanted a jumping one on a pogo stick. A solid effort nonetheless.

A note for the purists: the right upper corner of the front cover should say STEREO on it but when I took the photo it was pretty skewed. When I straightened the shot out STEREO got pushed off the grid. Just in case a Rambo's fanatic comes along and wonders.

JOHNNY DESMOND SWINGS

by Johnny Desmond

MAYFAIR RECORDS
9635S
STEREO
1958

SIDE A:

All Of You
The Last Time I Saw Paris
I Can't Get Started
I Got Plenty O'Nuttin
It's The Talk Of The Town
You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To

download

SIDE B:

It Ain't Necessarily So
Tenderly
This Can't Be Love
That Old Devil Moon
My Happy Time
There's A Small Hotel

download

Editor's note: Oh, I bet he does. Swing, that is. Merrily, gayly and flamboyantly. But only on stage. Or so his byline states. The record covers state otherwise or maybe it's just his Pee Wee Herman mannerisms showcased on the sleeve. Never mind me, peoples of the interwebs. Though, he was once given the nickname "The Cremer" in deference to Sinatra's "The Crooner" and Bing's "The Groaner", which sounds just as nefarious, so cut me slack while I pigeonhole a deceased man based upon his staged covers and the positioning of such despite his actually lived life.

I did find out that Johnny was from Detroit and that means I will be picking up any others that I come across. Bravo, eh? I was going to link to another of his albums but that one which was previously posted 8 1/2 years ago is basically this same record rearranged with the track Tenderly added. I blew that, eh? Oh, well. There is another record by Mayfair featured on this blog as well.

VOLUNTEER FIREMEN

 by the Joe Misti Band

JOE MISTI RECORDS
CS8466
STEREO
1982

SIDE A:

Volunteer Firemen Polka
At A Polish Wedding Polka
Erika and Nicky's Oberek
By The Water Czardas
Barrel of Fun Polka

download

SIDE B:

Love For Sale Polka
Beer Wagon Polka
James V. Ryan's Polka
Peach Mountain Oberek
Tutti Frutti Polka

download

Editor's note: I'm as half-Polish as you can get but were it not for the firemen theme, a historical photo of a historical site and the small town feel to this effort I wouldn't have bought it. Not that I dislike polka but I feel that listening to one polka record fairly encapsulates the genre and every one listened to afterwards is kind of a repeat performance in variance. But maybe there are some Joe Misti fans out there who have been searching tirelessly for this record. Surely there are a few Minersville fireman, past and present, who know a few of these gents and ladies and might be taken to a better time because of it. Have at it.

FAUSTO CIGLIANO E LA SUA CHITARRA

by Fausto Cigliano

CETRA RECORDS
LPA 70
33 1/3

SIDE A:

GUAGLIONE
LUNA 'NNAMMURATA
DINCELLO TU
PICCERELLA
NU' MME GUARDA'
'E RROSE D' 'O CORE
ADDUORMETE
PASSIONE AMARA

download

SIDE B:

SUSPIRANNO 'NA CANZONE
GUARDANNO 'O MARE
NUN T'ADDURMI
PEPPENIELLO 'O TRUMBETTIERE
MAGGIO SENZA ROSE
'A PALUMMELLA
CHITARRA MIA NAPULITANA
MANNAME 'NU RAGGIO 'E SOLE

download

Editor's note: the title might look stupid but the Google translation for E LA SUA CHITARRA returned "and its guitar" so I assume that it means his guitar. Either way it would look stupid minus the name so I added it. As for said guitar, it's brief in most instances and pleasant though it's not hard to see why the guy was only a flash in the pan in Italy. I mean classical guitar is great for tourists but I assume that the natives wanted American music and this guy was pushed. By the by he's sticking kicking around having moved from exclusively playing to researching. Or something like that. He also apparently did a few comedy movies a few decades back.

DEARLY BELOVED

by Marion Marlowe with Warren Vincent and The Farnsworth Strings

DESIGN RECORDS
DCF-1006
STEREO
1959

SIDE A:

I've Told Ev'ry Little Star (2:30)
Bill (3:34)
All Through The Day (2:25)
Yesterdays (2:42)
The Song Is You (2:28)

download

SIDE B:

Long Ago (3:30)
Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (3:18)
All The Things You Are (3:30)
I Won't Dance (3:40)
Dearly Beloved (3:27)

download

Editor's note: though this is the first offering by Mrs. Marlowe it's the 5th one from DESIGN RECORDS. Three of those are still available on this blog with "Hawaii Calling" needing a re-recording. Don't count on that happening any time soon. As for the record it's typical of the glamour shot lite lounge love song records that are plastered all over the internet on blogs like this. I approve of the medium.

YOGA FOR BEGINNERS

by Ruth Bender

NEW ENGLAND YOGA PRODUCTIONS
K118M
STEREO

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

Editor's note:  this is a bit clinical and Ruth Bender sounds like another German Ruth that we all used to know: Dr. Ruth Westheimer! But she seems to have her yoga routine down. Yeah, that's all I've got.

OUTLINED

 by Judy Smith

MASA RECORDS
M008
STEREO
1975?

SIDE A:

OUTLINED
BIGGER THAN MOUNTAINS
JUST AN IMAGE
I WILL SERVE HIM

download

SIDE B:

HE WAITS TO BE WANTED
I WOULD SEE CLEARLY
FOR FREEDOM
A SILENT WAY
BELIEVING IS LIVING

download

Editor's note: Since I have three more records in cue I could have easily waited until Sunday to post this but what's symbolism to me? I have the power! Haha. I can't believe that people still come to a blog and listen to this crap. Actually, I like this record. I like almost all of the religious records posted here based on the assumption that the person playing the music is earnest. Which is a horrible deduction but in the decade that I have been posting stuff nobody has ever commented on one of the records and said, "This person was a piece of garbage!" So we'll assume that only good people make music and only angels make religious songs. Which is faulty logic but in the case of Judy Smith I'll venture to guess that the scales of kindness tip in the positive ledger for her.

BABY

by Dianne Davidson

JANUS RECORDS
JLS-3031
STEREO
1971

SIDE A:

You're The Only One (2:48)
Just How Different Am I (3:46)
I Can't Help But Wonder (3:11)
Contemplation (3:11)
Sixty Minute Man (2:31)

download

SIDE B:

Trying Times (2:58)
Clowns Exit Laughing (2:36)
Until I Get Back Home (3:19)
You Might As Well Be Free (4:56)
We Have Seen The Sign / Coming To Take You (4:45)

download

Editor's note: I don't like her. No, not because she's not hot and svelte. All right, maybe that has a little to do with but even if she was the hottest woman on the planet I still wouldn't like her. The singing is good but I just don't like it. The songs aren't half-bad either but they seem fabricated and generic to me. Something like corporate media puts out by Billie Eilish that exploits the music at the expense of the person a la American Idol or whatever that show is called. Or maybe they were trying to make her the test case female Meat Loaf or something. What a horrible review this is of an okay record. I apologize in advance.

THE VELVETEEN RABBIT

by Margery Williams, narrated by Michael King

ALBA HOUSE COMMUNICATIONS
RAH 1040
STEREO
1977

SIDE A:

READ-ALONG VERSION

download

SIDE B:

LISTENING VERSION

download

Editor's note: as I said previously, don't get used to this. It takes lots of discipline and attention to post records everyday and I have zero of the aforementioned qualities. Mania? Yes. But nothing of the good essence of success. So you'll get a smattering now and maybe more later. We'll see. At least until my stock of unlistened to records is extinguished.

As for the record itself, I like it! I don't remember reading the story and can't imagine that this is the entire thing even as brief as some children's stories are. But it's succinct and enjoyable and the Skin Horse has some great advice for anybody who is an inanimate object and is looking for meaning in life.

Editor's note: Between the Ozark Opry and the Grand Old Opry I give no fugs. I was in the Ozarks once with some guys who drove an RV down to buy a bunch of guns at a show while I went...eh, let's not get into that here in public. Anyway, I promised that I would post more and have kept my end of the bargain. You?

DAY BEFORE TOMORROW

 by Kevin Stonerock

TOO WEST RECORDS
780310
STEREO
1978

SIDE A:

DAY BEFORE TOMORROW
EASY
MORNING SONG
NOTHING BEHIND IT
TWO CANDLES
YOU WERE MADE TO SMILE

download

SIDE B:

DAYS OF YORE
DOWN THE PIKE AGAIN
TIME
ARIZONA
LOVE ROADS

download

Editor's note: By the popular demand of nobody I return for two days in a row.

This record reminds me of Glenn Frey and Don McLean's worst non-hits with various other influences that I don't care about tossed in. I really shouldn't post musical records since I have no feeling for the vast majority of MUSIC.
