THE GREAT SINGALONG ALBUM

PLATINUM RECORDS
PL 778
STEREO

SIDE A:

MY SHOES KEEP WALKING BACK TO YOU
THERE GOES MY EVERYTHING
ALMOST PERSUADED
CRAZY
TONIGHT THE BOTTLE LET ME DOWN
BACK IN BABY'S ARMS

download

SIDE B:

LEGEND IN MY TIME
SLIDE OFF OF YOUR SATIN SHEETS
SHOULD I COME HOME [OR SHOULD I GO CRAZY]
BORROWED ANGEL
TIE A YELLOW RIBBON
LOVE IS A GOOD THING
SHE CALLED ME BABY
THE ONLY DADDY THAT'LL WALK THE LINE

download

SIDE C:

I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU
ALL OF THESE THINGS
TOGETHER AGAIN
TODAY I STARTED LOVING YOU AGAIN
WELCOME TO MY WORLD
IT'S SUCH A PRETTY WORLD TODAY
TOUCH MY HEART

download

SIDE D:

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
MAKE THE WORLD GO AWAY
YOU LAY EASY ON MY MIND
KISS AN ANGEL GOOD MORNING
WOMAN, SENSUOUS WOMAN
FOR THE GOOD TIMES
TULSA TIME

download

Editor's note: it's a sing-a-long and an album but not so great. Either way, it's an early foray into karaoke in the vinyl world. Or maybe not. Whatever the case you sing the song and the album provides the music and backing vocals.

RUSTY RIDES AGAIN

by Rusty Warren

JUBILEE RECORDS
JGM 2064
1967

SIDE A:

download

SIDE B:

download

Editor's note: I'm not a big fan of Rusty Warren or comedy in general. Add in my derision for so-called funny songs and you've already struck a sour note with me. I don't think it's funny or risque but I do like the cover. Especially since I cut off the very bottom slice which pronounced the motorcycle to be a Harley and thus kewl. I don't believe in cool, Harleys or the Marlboro Man. I don't believe in much of man's artifice either. To quote the poet play-acting within his words as a beast on a mountainside, "I believe in my tusks." These are them.

JIMMIE RUTH MATTHEWS SINGS SACRED, SOUTHERN AND COUNTRY GOSPEL

by Jimmie Ruth Matthews with Lorne Matthews on piano

GOLDEN SHIELD RECORDS
LPS 122
STEREO
1970s

SIDE A:

I WALKED TODAY WHERE JESUS WALKED
THE STRANGER OF GALILEE
THE HOLY CITY
GOD LEADS US ALONG
JESUS, THE SON OF GOD

download

SIDE B:

I WALKED TODAY WITH THE LORD
I WON'T HAVE TO CROSS JORDAN ALONE
PITY THE MAN
GLORYLAND
WHO AM I
ROOM AT THE CROSS

download

Editor's note: the dummy doesn't appear on this album like it did on many of Jimmie's productions but he's there in spirit as her and Lorne kick out the Jimmie jams Jesus style. While you likely snicker at their devotional and call their God a tin icon they probably still wish you well while you're genuflecting to the nothingness that you believe in with all the piety of a zealot.

ULYSSES

read Siobhan McKenna and E. G. Marshall

CAEDMON RECORDS
TC-1063
MONO
1961

SIDE A:

Soliloquy of Molly Bloom

download

SIDE B:

Soliloquy of Leopold Bloom

download

Editor's note: what a tawdry little tale of nothingness despair. Life, as humans knew it to be a sacred thing, ended sometime shortly after it was created and has devolved ever since. Politically and spiritually, as a whole, it has taken longer. One would have to guess the late 1800s was, as far as the United States is concerned, when Death reared its inevitable face and spiraled into our psyches on a full-time basis. Maybe it was the constant wars or the fragility of life itself. Whatever it was let the debbil in deliberately. While I haven't read this book beyond the first few pages of twaddle and this short vocal excerpt, the rendering is obtuse in its profanity and profane in its glorification of life's shallows. I wouldn't waste the paper to burn it but would rather recycle and dispose of it in a meaningful manner of countenance to things better left unknown.

WHOA! LOOK! AND LISTEN!

by Jimmy Richardson at the Hammond Organ

MARCILE RECORDS
MLP 170

SIDE A:

Red Roses for a Blue Lady
Theme from "Our Gang"
Loves Make the World Go Round
King of the Road
Your Cheatin' Heart
Once a Day
Up a Lazy River

download

SIDE B:

Chim Chim Cheree
I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love With You
The Race is On
Making Believe
Square Dance Rag
Cotton Fields Down Home
Way Out Yonder on the Reservation

download

Editor's note: Straight from Shelbyville, Tennessee, this is a rare record by a highly competent organist on an obscure label: what could be better? A lot but I'm not complaining. I mean, if Jimmy Richardson wasn't on the cover standing next to a stop sign this would still be sitting on a store shelf collecting dust. Now it can collect on mine.

THE TALE OF BENJAMIN BUNNY / THE TALE OF THE FLOPSY BUNNIES

narrated by Vivien Leigh

GOLDEN RECORDS
GW 227

SIDE A:

THE TALE OF BENJAMIN BUNNY

download

SIDE B:

THE TALE OF THE FLOPSY BUNNIES

download

Editor's note: I didn't realize that Vivian Leigh was reading nor did I particularly care. Nor should you. Of course, you probably shouldn't be listening to kid's records either you old creeper. But here we are. Ah- well. I guess it's better than becoming a furry and reading aloud to schoolkids at their progressive mother's behest.

ON A MAGIC CARPET

by The Three Suns

RCA VICTOR RECORDS
LPM-2235
MONO
1960

SIDE A:

Canadian Sunset (3:10)
Lisbon Antigua (2:14)
Terry Theme (3:15)
High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me) (3:45)
Moritat (3:25)
The Poor People Of Paris (Jean's Song) (2:47)

download

SIDE B:

Blue Tango (2:58)
Meet Mr. Callaghan (2:20)
The Song From Moulin Rouge (Where Is Your Heart) (2:17)
Ruby (2:45)
The 3rd Man Theme (2:27)
Fleur De Paree (2:06)

download

Editor's note: it's kind of shady to call The Three Suns obscure at this point, or the vast majority of these records for that matter, and I wouldn't have bought this one save for the album cover. The music is what you'd expect from this triumvirate of jazz-liters and is neither to be sought after or disparaged but played on a micro machine music player in the vast emptiness of the internet.

KNOXVILLE'S RICK WALKER

by Rick Walker

K-TOWN RECORDS
1001
STEREO

SIDE A:

Since I Fell For You
Everybody's Talkin'
Stranger In My Place
Memphis
Ain't No Sunshine

download

SIDE B:

Charlie's Boogie
It's Impossible
Chevy Van
Harlem Nocturne
In The Mood

download

Editor's note: as I said in the preview of this record, Harlem Nocturne was the only track that stirred me to  anything beyond primordial stirrings. And stir I did. Hell, I actually listened to it 5 times or so. It's the second offering that I've posted from K-Town Records and both have impressed me with their DIY appeal.

Editor's note: this is Charles Magnante's second appearance on this blog though the first on Command Records. Since I listened to this last weekend and don't remember a lick of the album I'm just going to assume that it was standard romantic accordion.

THE NEWS IN REVELATION

by Marian Estep with Lorin Whitney on organ

ANGELUS RECORDS
WR 4422

SIDE A:

Jesus Is Coming Again
Some Golden Daybreak
I'm Looking Today For Him
Christ Returneth
When We See Christ
I'm Going Higher

download

SIDE B:

What If It Were Today?
Jesus Is Coming Again With A Shout
He's Coming Soon
Is It The Crowning Day?
Oh, What A Day
I Want To See My Savior First Of All

download

Editor's note: you think that you can front when Revelation comes? Huh? Yeah, you can't front on that. But Marian Estep could and she had the powerhouse organist Lorin Whitney to back her up. He who played with the birds, Hawaiians and God himself (as a soloist). This is a solid church record if my atheist soul may so.

HOW THE WAIST WAS WON

by June LaSalvia and the Lean Jeans Band

PLANTATION RECORDS
PLP-52
STEREO
1982

SIDE A:

Get Up Off Your Good Intentions (2:52)
Tulsa Time (3:25)
Nine To Five (2:41)
Rocky Top (2:58)

Elvira (3:53)
Before The Next Teardrop Falls (2:33)
Turn The World Around The Other Way (2:59)
Intro To Relaxation (1:01)
Daydream (8:31)

download

Editor's note: the cover alone is worth the price of admission and everything after that is pure gravy on yer taters. Taters be thy name! Tater salad and taters. Fried chicken and taters. Taters and taters and taters and taters. All flesh be gone whence the turntable rolls these sweet southern songs out for ya.

THE SUBMARINE OFFICER

by Bill Dana as Jose Jimenez

KAPP RECORDS
KL-1215
MONO?
1960

SIDE A:

The Submarine Officer
The Judo Expert
The Piano Tuner
The Television Engineer

download

SIDE B:

The Broadway Writer
The Piano Tuner (Again)
The Artist
The J.J.J. Salesman
Warmup From Spike Jones Show

download

Editor's note: you know what to expect by now. Slapstick. Deadpan. Early 1960s approval. Not a bad shtick if you can get it and a lot of people seemingly got it. What you can expect from Mr. Jimenez in the future on this blog is no appearances for another decade or so.

Preview of Knoxville's Rick Walker's Collection of Most Requested Songs

I usually don't do previews. Mostly because I am too unmotivated but also because it's a waste of time. In this case it's a necessity. The track below, Harlem Nocturne, which I had never heard before but believe that it's an old classic impressed me enough to garner a special post. It's a left turn on this album of crooning and myopic top 40 melodies. Or not. I mostly blanked in and out while recording this but Harlem Nocturne woke me up. Have a listen.

download

It's from a fairly scarce recording but somebody from Missouri has a sealed copy for sale on eBay if you can't live without it.

THE ASTRONAUT

by Bill Dana as Jose Jimenez

KAPP RECORDS
KL-1238
MONO
1961

SIDE A:

My Nightclub Act
Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup
The Astronaut (With Don Hinkley)

download

SIDE B:

Presenting Bill Dana
Any Questions!

download

Editor's note: I'm not sure why I clarified in this post that Bill Dana was playing the part of Jose Jimenez since William Szathmary was playing the part of Bill Dana as well. All personas of the same dude. Today, he would be put in prison for cultural appropriation. But back then he got a television show out of the shtick.

JOSE JIMENEZ TALKS TO TEENAGERS

by Jose Jimenez

KAPP RECORDS
KL 1304
MONO
1962

SIDE A:

The Cheerleader (3:05)
The Vocational Guidance Counselor (3:39)
The Etiquette Expert (10:17)

download

SIDE B:

The Baseball Star (2:58)
Teenage Problems (2:15)
The History Lesson - Christopher Columbus (3:16)
The Marriage Counselor (2:23)
Another History Lesson - George Washington (2:10)
My Alma Mater (4:10)

download

Editor's note: I've had at least one or two Jose Jimenez records for a decade or so but for some reason have never recorded any of them. A fact that had eluded me until I sorted out my record stash today. I even alphabetized my religious and Christmas albums. That's what happens when I get a weekend off. Anyway, two more Jose Jimenez records will follow this one on subsequent days. They are somewhat clever but hardly laugh-out-loud funny. They are classics just the same.

LEAVES OF GRASS

read by Ed Begley

CAEDMON RECORDS
TC 1037
1959

SIDE A:

I Hear America Singing
The Old Face Of The Mother Of Many Children
To A Locomotive
A March In The Ranks Hard-Prest
The Sleepers Are Very Beautiful
Song Of Myself

download

SIDE B:

When I Heard The Learn'd Astronomer
Out Of The Cradle Endlessly Rocking
Give Me The Splendid Silent Sun
Good-Bye My Fancy!

download

Editor's note: I've always believed that bad poetry sounds even worse when spoken and this is as bad as it gets. Walt frickin' Whitman. Bard of the overwrought. Progenitor to the pedo-con man Ginsberg. Two ruiners of verse. Though, you can give Whitman some credit for opening the genre which produced Robinson Jeffers and the Modernists. The latter whom I also loathed but compared to what came after them, they are the standard bearers of the art. But enough of my prattling. Listen to the king of prattling via the mouthpiece of Ed Begley. Surely, he was a Communist who hated America. Nothing else explains that voiiiiiice.
