SELECTIONS FROM THE HAUNTED HOUSE AND OTHER SPOOKY POEMS AND TALES

read by Paul Hecht and Carole Danell

SCHOLASTIC RECORDS
CC 0688
33 1/3 RPM
1970

SIDE A:

The Haunted House
Winter Moon
Sir Roderic's Song
A Young Lady From Glitch
Ruth And Johnnie
A Skeleton Once In Khartoum
It Isn't The Cough
The Bat
The Velvet Ribbon

download

SIDE B:

The Erl-King
November Night
Dust
The Kilkenny Cats
The Cradle That Rocked By Itself

download

Editor's note: as with the previous post this one while good would have been so much better with its original sleeve included. But you get what you get in the secondhand world when searching in the wilds or you pay through the teeth online for a stellar copy. While not scary in the least this is at least entertaining as most things Halloween and vinyl related are.

SPACE SONGS

by The Peter Pan Orchestra & Chorus

PETER PAN RECORDS
45-585
45 RPM

SIDE A:

A TRIP ON A ROCKET SHIP

download

SIDE B:

ON THE MOON

download

Editor's note: I have not felt much like recording lately but found this at an estate sale for 50 cents along with two other 45s so it was a no-brainer to get me semi-motivated. I'm still not but am doing it just the same. A decent scarce rendering from the atom age before the fake space age began that would have been much better if it had its original sleeve.

BUTTON BOX APPEAL

by The Polish Kid

SOUND RECORDS
1058
STEREO
1974

SIDE A:

Polka Country Polka
Mazurka No. One In D Major
Such-A-Polka
Dark Eyes Polka
Deutchman's Waltz
Dance Russian Dance Polka

download

SIDE B:

Happy Whistler Polka
Fette Frau Waltz
Fat Eddie Bounce Polka
Lost Horizons Waltz
Pieyed Piper Polka
Swiss Valley Waltz

download

Editor's note: said Polish "kid" appears to be about 35 but that's okay in recordo land. The banana on top of an accordion with a sky blue backdrop and drawn in flowers forgives him the transgression of the ill-used moniker. That said, I don't remember a lick of this record from the time I recorded it 2 or 3 sultry days ago. Such are the travails of a heat wave. But the recorder remembers and here is the testimony of its recollection.

WITH BELLS ON

by Sid Bass and His Orchestra

RCA CAMDEN RECORDS
CAS 501
STEREO
1959

SIDE A:

The Bells Are Swinging
What Is There To Say
Pick Yourself Up
Say It With Music
In The Wee Small Hours
You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To

download

SIDE B:

Ridin' High
Soon
Blue Bells
Blue Room
The House Is Haunted
Love Walked In

download

Editor's note: the musicality of Sid Bass is beyond reproach, at least in my ears and eyes, but that Gawd-awful photo of him looking like a cross between Pee Wee Herman and Tucker Carlson if off-putting to say the least. Plus he looks happy! The hell you say?!?! Happiness is only for women, children and gays. All right, I'm crossing the line now. Listen to the music and judge for yourself what's what and listen to more Sid Bass if you feel the need.

Another thing of note: if my perceptive skills are correct it seems that many of the records that I choose for the blog seem to come from around 1959. Which is hardly my "type" of music but as far as obscure records go that time period had the cover look and appeal that entices me into buying them.

THE BARTLETT SINGERS SING BECAUSE HE LIVES

by The Bartlett Singers

HTM RECORDS
AR 2856
STEREO

SIDE A:

BECAUSE HE LIVES
THE HEALER
IT WILL PASS
GREAT, GREAT DAY
TILL THE STORM PASSES BY
LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT JESUS

download

SIDE B:

I DON'T KNOW WHY JESUS LOVES ME
UNSEEN HANDS
THROUGH IT ALL
IF YOU HAD BEEN THERE
MIRACLES WILL HAPPEN ON THAT DAY

download

Editor's note: another DIY Jesus record that doesn't really stand out from the crowd. But one never knows this when just looking at an album. I hate to suggest that I want them to be bad but I kind of do want them to be just that. That's not exclusive to religion since I want all the records here to be either astoundingly good or horrid though most are middling sorts.

SCHLAGER SCHLAGER SCHLAGER

download

SIDE B:

Butterfly (1:35)
Swing Low (1:32)
Love Story (1:40)
My Darling Helena (1:39)
He's Got The Whole World (0:58)
Kumbayah (1:20)
Chirpy, Chirpy (1:32)
It's Time To Go (1:44)
Nobody Knows (1:33)
Zaig Mir Den Platz An Der Sonne (1:28)
Akropolis, Adieu (1:40)
Fremder Mann (1:39)
Judy, I Love You (0:47)
Ein Verrückter Tag (1:40)

download

Editor's note: the 4th is over and it's time to get back to the happy horseshit music. Nothing says happy horseshit like repeating "schlager" three times. And I come to find out that it basically means happy horseshit music! Well, happy-go-lucky which more-or-less translates to the same thing. The cover more than makes up for the content though couldn't they have afforded to hire two more models?

STAR SPANGLED HARMONY

featuring The Wolverine Chorus; narrated by Mike Whorf

MARK RECORDS
MC1206
STEREO

SIDE A:

WHAT A COUNTRY
EARLY AMERICAN MEDLEY / AMERICAN REVOLUTION MEDLEY
PEG OF MY HEART

download

SIDE B:

download

SIDE C:

download

SIDE D:

download

Editor's note: the sole purpose that compelled me to buy this record was the fact that Mike Whorf was a noted radio host in Detroit back in the day. I don't remember him because I wasn't really interested in talk radio when I was a kid. Not many are. But I've heard the name and know that he interviewed Gundella the Witch who has made an appearance on this blog and was a Detroit staple in the 1970s through to the early 1990s. Anyway, Whorf's narration didn't do much for me.

CONCERTO ELECTRO

 by Dick Hyman

COMMAND RECORDS
COM 951-S
STEREO
1970

SIDE A:

Movement I (11:45)
Movement II (5:27)

download

SIDE B:

Movement III (7:15)
Alternate Cadenza A (1:35)
Alternate Cadenza B (1:40)

download

Editor's note: old Dick Hyman, alternate pianissimo of the fourth kind strikes yet again. How many records did this dude put out? Not enough! While perusing books at a local thrift store as is my national past time--records are a mere afterthought though they are more easily digested and regurgitated for mass consumption in this sort of forum--I saw this record sleeve and had to have it. I grabbed another two slices of wax and left before mania overtook me. I also had to get to work so that was a fortunate thing as well. Anyway, this is a mishmash of jazz-rock-a-orchestral-rhythm. Kind of like every other record these sort of piano dudes pumped out except this time it's in a concert form. I'll accept that.

Editor's note: today was destined to be a miss day as I run out of music and the will to post during the heat wave. Not to mention that I feel like garbage. But I had a rejuvenation this evening and so the streak will likely end tomorrow until we got some relief from the garbage temps or I get AC. Otherwise, I'd have to change my recording habits and that ain't happening. Plus, it's been a real struggle lately to take photos of the album covers. I'm not sure why but likely it's the banality of the task at hand when I just want to flop around after a 19 hour car ride on Saturday. Anyway, I recorded this probably a year ago and had it laying around so up it goes.
